January 23, 2020 Waco - Baylor University has announced its newest class of graduates, who celebrated their achievement during fall commencement exercises December 21 in the Ferrell Center on the Baylor campus. Katie Michelle Williams, a 2013 graduate of Shelbyville High School, was among the graduates and she received a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Film and Digital Media.

Nestled along the banks of the Brazos River in Waco, Texas, Baylor provides numerous educational and research opportunities across various disciplines through 127 baccalaureate programs, 78 master's programs, 46 doctoral programs, including a juris doctor, the education specialist program and the Master of Laws program.

Baylor students interact with outstanding full-time faculty from their first days on campus, with a student-to-faculty ratio of 13 to 1. The University's vibrant campus life also includes more than 300 clubs and organizations and varsity athletics competing in the Big 12 Conference.

January 22, 2020 - The Piney Woods Photographic Society held their regular monthly meeting Saturday, January 18, 2020, There was a workshop held on how to photograph Reds and Colors. ChThe monthly challenge "Photographer's Choice" featured photographs submitted by members for favorite votes and critique.

The PWPS meets every third Saturday of the month, at the First United Methodist Church, 211 Porter St., Center, TX. from 9 a.m.- 12 p.m.. If you are interested in learning more about your camera, better photography techniques or group photo shoots, we are the group for you. Visitors are invited to attend. Complete that dream of becoming a better photographer and come to our next meeting, the third Saturday of February.

January 20, 2020 - Hana Bonner, a 2017 Graduate of Joaquin ISD, was named to the Fall 2019 Dean's List at LeTourneau University. The Dean's List recognizes students who have achieved a grade point average between 3.50 and 3.99 for the semester.

Bonner is a Junior majoring in Kinesiology.

January 16, 2020 - During the month of December 2019, Shelby County Outreach Ministries' (SCOM) Helping Hands provided 292 emergency food boxes which helped to feed 593 people and met the needs of 324. The Senior Site provided 391 congregate meals, Meals on Wheels provided 723 meals, and 491 frozen meals for a total of 1,605 meals were provided in December alone.

For the year of 2019, a total of 19,517 meals were provided, 3,399 emergency food boxes given away, 3,994 needs met, and 7,087 people fed.

Ways to Help: 

  • Food of the Month: Peanut Butter, Canned Meats, Ramen Noodle Soup, and Mac & Cheese. Please bring food items to the Helping Hands Outreach Center at 930 Shelbyville Street.
  • Volunteer Opportunities: Volunteers are needed in each of our programs. For more infor-mation on any of the above, call us at 598-4990.
  • Volunteers for our Fundraiser Committee: We are always seeking individuals to help us pia' organize and help with fundraisers throughout the year. If you are interested, please call Sherri Harding at 598-4990.
  • Canned Food Drives: We are always in the need of canned goods. If you or your business would like to have a food drive, please contact us for more information.

January 14, 2020 - Delta Kappa Gamma Society International supports educational endeavors of ladies in education. President Wendy Watson of the local chapter, Delta Gamma, recently presented a check to Stacy Barr to continue her studies in counseling. 

Stacy currently teaches at Tenaha Elementary. Delta Gamma presents a check each year to a deserving young lady in the field of education. 

We are proud to assist Stacy with her interest in counseling.

January 9, 2020 - Walter Bounds who has Bounds AV did a video of the downtown square giving everyone a birds-eye view of the progress of the construction as of January 8, 2020.

The video is labeled "Every Beautiful City Deserves a Beautiful Heart."

January 9, 2020 - Brisa Guevara of Center was recognized among the students named to the Dean's List in the College of Letters and Science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison for the fall semester of the 2019-2020 academic year.

Students who achieve at a high level academically are recognized by the dean at the close of each semester. To be eligible for the Dean's List, students must complete a minimum of 12 graded degree credits in that semester. Each university school or college sets its own GPA requirements for students to be eligible to receive the distinction.

Guevara was the Class of 2019 salutatorian and is the daughter of Cristina Olalde and Jose Guevara. She is pursuing a major in foreign language (Japanese/Spanish) to pursue a career as an interpreter/translator.

January 7, 2020 - The entire Blue Santa team would like to thank you for your generous donation to the Blue Santa program.

With your donation and others like yours, we were able to provide Christmas to approximately 285 children (120 families). That is 285 smiles put on little children’s faces. Again thank you, we could not do it without you! You truly helped Blue Santa make a Child's Christmas blessed this year.

January 2, 2020 - McNeese State University awarded 628 diplomas to 618 students at the university’s fall commencement ceremony Saturday, December 14, as commencement exercises returned to an on-campus venue for the first time in 33 years in the new Health and Human Performance Education Complex.

Of the Fall 2019 Texas graduates, James Thomas Hovey of Joaquin, Texas earned a Bachelor of Science in General Business Administration.
