Susan Karen Whiddon, 82, of Joaquin, TX passed away peacefully Friday, November 28, 2025, in Tenaha, TX.
Born August 26, 1943, in Dallas, TX at Florence Nightengale Hospital, Susan is the daughter of Orren Cox Whiddon and Cynthia Betty Cockrell Whiddon. She graduated from Joaquin High School and Austin Peay University in Clarksville, TN. She was a beloved teacher and coach at Center Junior High School. It was the privilege of her career to lead and inspire the Riderettes to multiple District Championships throughout the years.
In the summer, you would find Susan at Crystal Lake, the Whiddon family water park in Joaquin, teaching water safety, lifeguarding and running the place as her father’s right hand. Generations of east Texans who braved the trolly towers to ride the zipline learned to obey her voice over the intercom “If you’re not pulling up the rope, stand behind the red barrier!”. Susan was known for her sense of humor and never met a stranger. In her later years, trips to Walmart turned into a slow crawl as you couldn’t turn a corner without someone coming over to say, “Hello, Ms. Whiddon!”. She was active in the local trail riding community and ran a small herd of cattle for years that she treated as pets. She was larger than life, a cherished friend to many and made the world a better place.
She is survived by:

Jean Tyler Whiddon of Hideaway

Phillip Bart Lynch, 48 of Appleby, passed away November 20, 2025 in Nacogdoches, Texas. He was born June 21, 1977 in Center, Texas to Phil Lynch and Jan Cruse.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2pm on Saturday, November 29, 2025 at Appleby City Hall located at 14760 North US Hwy 59 in Nacogdoches, Texas with Bro. Malcolm Monroe officiating. The family will greet friends and family beginning at 1pm prior to the service.
Bart was the friend that a friend wants to have. He never walked away from anyone that needed him and was willing to give everything he had to someone that needed it more than he did. He was generous, kind, loyal and absolutely loved being around people. He was often called a “teddy bear” or a “gentle giant” referring to his stature and big heart. Bart made life what he wanted it to be and was successful in finding a joy that most people do not discover in a full lifetime. He was a hard worker and had spent the last 7 years with Appleby Natural Gas, a job that he dearly loved, and was mentioned amongst most people as “The Gas Man.” The people he served became like family and he enjoyed serving the community he loved so dearly.
Bart attended Huntsville High School, graduating with the class of 1996. Bart and Linda Lomax were sweethearts in their early lives and after going their separate ways, but recently finding themselves single again, they reunited. Their love was rekindled and they both agreed that to each other, they were “the one that got away.” Linda filled Bart’s life with more happiness than he had experienced in many years and they had just begun planning the rest of their lives together. Bart loved his friends and family and wanted nothing more than to be surrounded by those closest to him. He and his sister have always dreamed of carrying on the tradition of cattle raising that was passed down by their grandparents. He was fortunate enough to have accomplished that dream and enjoying the time he spent in the pastures working his cattle quickly became his happy place.
Bart will forever be remembered as the person to call when you needed a helping hand or just a friend to talk to and the end of the conversations most likely than not, ended with a humble and meaningful “I love you kid.”
Bart is survived by:
Parents:
Larry and Jan Cruse
Sarah Lynch
Girlfriend, Linda Lomax
Sisters:
Penny Bonner and husband Tyler
Virginia Sanches and husband Bubba

Martha Pickens May, 71, of Center, passed away Saturday, November 15, 2025, in Tatum, TX.
Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, November 18, 2025, at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center with visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. Charles Nicholas Conner will officiate.
Interment will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Park in Center.
Born March 24, 1954, in Center, Martha is the daughter of Homer Leon Pickens, Sr. and Joyce Edge Pickens. Martha was a beloved mother, nana, wife, sister, and friend. She was born and raised in Center, and it remained the heart of her world throughout her 51½-year marriage to her devoted husband, Sammy. Surrounded by her loving family, Martha left this world after a courageous battle with cancer, finding her final peace.
Martha was the heart and soul of her family. Her love for Sammy was a once-in-a-lifetime bond, a true partnership where each cared for the other above all. She was a loving mother to her sons. She shared a daily "goodnight" call with her son Joey, a ritual that spoke to a deep, abiding friendship. They spent every moment they could together and cherished every second. She carried immense pride for her son, Cody, and all he accomplished, holding him forever in her heart. As a sister, she was a loyal protector and a constant, listening presence. Her role as "Nana" was her greatest joy, and her grandchildren were the light of her life. The love she had for her nieces and nephews was as great as any mother’s love for their child.
She lived every day with purpose and love. Martha never forgot a birthday, and no occasion passed without a card in the mail—a small testament to her thoughtful and caring nature. She was famous among her many nieces and nephews for her grilled cheese sandwiches, sliced dill pickles, and chocolate milk made with a generosity that mirrored her spirit. An admirer of Dolly Parton, Martha embodied that same kindness and strength. Martha found joy in simple things like butterflies, magnolias, and Margaritas from Margaritas on the Square in Center she’d occasionally enjoy with family or friends. She leaves behind a legacy of resilience and unconditional love carried on by her heartbroken husband, Sammy; her children; her daughters-in-law, her grandchildren; her siblings; and countless nieces, nephews, and friends.
As her beloved Dolly Parton once said, “The way I see it, if you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain.” Martha faced the storms of life with incredible strength, and her memory is the beautiful rainbow she leaves for us all.
