September 21, 2017 - Center Intermediate School students, led by their GT teacher Mrs. Kris Rash, participated in the National Garden Club youth sculpture contest.
This contest encourages students to keep our planet green and to get involved with saving the environment as they create a sculpture with recyclable, reused, and reduced materials. These students were in the 4th and 5th grades at the time of the contest. Students were awarded certificates and cash prizes for winning 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place.

September 19, 2017 - This year's East Texas Poultry Festival entertainment lineup is welcoming an Austin, Texas duo to the stage - Lynette and Lefty.
Lynette and Lefty (Lynette Wolfe and David Gardner) are an Ameripolitan Honky Tonk Duo from Austin, Texas. The Duo has recently moved home to be close to family here in Center and are excited to perform at the Poultry Festival and become part of the East Texas community. Lynette and Lefty will be playing at 1:00 pm on both Friday and Saturday, October 6th and 7th. The Duo writes, sings and performs their own music, along with some great old time songs and a one of a kind vaudeville style act, they are completely entertaining and refreshing. September 19, 2017 - Only 16 days left until the 41st Annual East Texas Poultry Festival, Sponsored by Farmers State Bank, opens its gates to a weekend of Fun, Entertainment, Arts and Crafts and lots of Food!
The Cutting of Boa will be held on Thursday, October 5th at 10:00 am on the Frances Oates Center Stage! Children from all over the County will keep us entertained for the rest of the day! Look for the rest of the weekend entertainment activities in future updates.
The 5K Chicken Trot and Fun Run, Sponsored by Cline’s Family Medicine and 936 Crossfit will be held on Saturday morning, October 7, at the Windham Civic Center. Fun Run starts at 7:00am and the Trot starts at 7:30a.m.
Super Wednesday is September 27th. Spend the day on the Square starting with the Fajita Lunch at 11:00. The Doo Dah Parade will be begin at 4:30, followed by the Chicken Cooking Contest 5:00pm.
The 2017 East Texas Poultry Festival Queen will be crowned on September 30th at 6:00pm at Center High School. There are 14 lovely young ladies participating in the Pageant activities, representing all Shelby County Schools. They are escorted by 14 nice young men. The Queen and her Court shall reign over the Festival.
So Mark Your Calendars for October 5th, 6th and 7th. See you at the Festival!!
September 18, 2017 - A Mini-Princess School will be held from 9am to 12 noon on Saturday, September 23, 2017. Little princesses ages 6 to 10 will learn social graces and table etiquette fit for a princess.

September 18, 2017 - VFW Post 8904 and Auxiliary members hosted the 2017 POW/MIA Recognition Day Program on the Center square before the Shelby County Veteran's Memorial September 15, 2017.
The program was led by Larry Hume, Post Quartermaster, and he gave the opening prayer.
"On this day we salute the men and women who have served to keep America free and in doing so sacrificed their own freedom," said Hume. "To remember the families of the missing, we continue to hope and pray that their loved ones will someday be accounted for. We have over 83,000 American's since World War II missing or unaccounted for."
Gene Hutto, Post Commander, hung the memorial wreath as a thank you to all those who were prisoners of war or are now and are still missing in action.
Hume referenced there were 31 prisoners of war held during World War II and three during the Korean War who all were Shelby County citizens, three of which died while in captivity.
"The others lived through a terrible ordeal that we can't even imagine, and by the grace of God they returned home," said Hume.
He remarked all of those, but one listed in the program for the day have gone on to meet their maker. Marshall (Tex) Windham is the one he mentioned is still living and is an uncle of Danny Paul Windham.
Following a reading of the names of those who were prisoners of war and who are missing in action the POW/MIA flag which flies below the American flag throughout the year on the Center square was retired and replaced with a new one.
At that time Taps was played as presented by John Piersol.

September 18, 2017 - September 18 is one of two days in September the Daughters of the Republic of Texas specify as Honor Days. This day is known as Texas Heroes Day. On this day the memory or the volunteer soldiers who died defending the Republic of Texas and establishing her independence are remembered. Join with the organization in honoring this group, as well as all the men and women of the military, both past and present.
The third Saturday in September, this year September 16, is set aside as Texian Navy Day. In September 1835 the first naval engagement of the Texas Revolution occurred near Velasco, when the Texian privateer, the San Felipe, engaged the Mexican ship, the Correo. The Texian Navy won its first victory in the War of Independence on the high seas. This event was one month before the first significant land battle of the Texas Revolution at Gonzales

2017 Queen’s Court
September 18, 2017 - The Shelby County Chamber of Commerce held a Welcome Party to introduce and welcomed the 2017 East Texas Poultry Festival Queen’s Court. Reigning Queen, Madelynn Hutchins, spoke to the young ladies summarizing her experience of 2016 and gave them some insight as to what to expect. Each candidate introduced themselves, their Escort and their parent prior to enjoying dinner together catered by The BBQ Joint.
The upcoming schedule and pageant rules and guidelines were reviewed. The Queen’s Court program has a month long schedule of events including a Social and Masquerade Ball as part of the enrichment program for the candidates and their escorts prior to the scholarship pageant. There are representatives from all the Shelby County High Schools in the 2017 Court.
The Coronation will be held Saturday, September 30 at 6:00 p.m. at the Center High School Cafetorium when the Queen candidates will be presented to Shelby County. Reserved tickets must be purchased in advance by contacting the Chamber at info@shelbycountychamber.com or calling 936.598.3682. General admission tickets may be purchased at the door.

September 15, 2017 - Thank a Police Officer Day, also known as National Tell a Police Officer "Thank You" Day, is being observed on Saturday September 16th, 2017! which is scheduled to start 8pm on Friday and end 8pm on Saturday in order to include all shifts. It has been observed the third Saturday of September since a national campaign was started in 2012 by the Whole Truth Project. This is a day where people across the country - from small towns to big cities - take a moment and say "thank you" to any police officer they may happen to run across. It's a simple way of showing gratitude for those who serve and protect us .
The Center Police Department Ladies Auxiliary is honoring their officers this year with a personalized serving tray decorated with their name, and the year they started in Law Enforcement. They will also receive cookies , and a giant Thank you Card. When you see an Officer, remember to say Thank you!
