September 5, 2024 - The Fannie Brown Booth Memorial Library is pleased to announce the awarding of the Tocker Foundation Library Transformation Grant in the amount of $100,000. The Tocker Foundation promotes public libraries in communities of 12,000 or less. The Tocker Foundation was established in 1964 to implement the philanthropic interests of Phillip and Olive Tocker. Mr. Tocker was an attorney and built an outdoor advertising business in Waco, TX. In 1993 and 1994, Mr. and Mrs. Tocker endowed the foundation with their estates.
Since 1992, the Tocker Foundation has been supporting small rural libraries to make library services more accessible to the public. The foundation partners with libraries to meet the particular needs of the community. The Executive Director of the foundation is Darryl Tocker.
The Fannie Brown Booth Memorial Library has been serving Center and the surrounding area in its present location on Tenaha Street since 1974. The library is planning a major interior renovation in late fall consisting of new shelves, furniture, carpet, lighting, and amenities to make the library more inviting and user-friendly for the public. An enlarged children’s area, a teen area, and a comfortable reading area are also planned. An open house to celebrate our 50th anniversary is also being planned.
The generous grant from the Tocker Foundation will cover most of the cost of the renovation, but it will not entirely cover the cost of the renovation. The library invites civic groups, corporations, businesses, patrons, and concerned citizens to support this historic project. September 4, 2024 - On Monday, September 2, 2024, VFW Post 8904 and the Auxiliary held a wreath-laying in honor of V J (Victory over Japan) Day. On this day, 79 years ago, aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay, the Japanese signed the instrument of surrender that ended World War II.
The program was held at the Veterans Memorial on the grounds of the 1885 Historic Courthouse. Past Post Commander Gene Hutto placed the Memorial Wreath in honor of all who served in the Pacific.

September 3, 2024 - On Friday, August 30, 2024, members of VFW Post 8904 and the Auxiliary gathered at the Veterans Memorial on the grounds of the 1885 Historic Courthouse and remembered those veterans who served in "Operation Iraqi Freedom," which began on March 20, 2003 and ended on August 31, 2010.
Post Chaplain Richard Lundie gave the invocation followed by Quartermaster Mary Roberts giving the history of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
"The war in Iraq began on March 20, 2003, and continued until August 31, 2010. It has been twelve years since the end of hostilities, and it is our duty as fellow veterans and citizens to ensure this piece of history and sacrifices made are never forgotten... During the Iraq War, 4,486 Americans paid the ultimate sacrifice, including Shelby County's own U.S. Army Specialist Larry E. Polley, Jr. in January of 2004. Larry graduated from Center High School in 2001 and was 20 years old when killed in action. Many more Americans suffered wounds and loss of limbs in that war."

- If a personal Care Attendant or companion will accompany you. Your application for service must be signed by your physician for your PCA to ride free of charge.
- If you will be using a wheelchair, scooter, or other mobility device.

This service is only offered on Wednesdays. Scheduling begins a week before, it is a first come – first serve service. The cost is $3.50 per ride, $7 round trip. The transport is for in-county trips only at this time. Hopefully, this is just a start of the service and the days of service will increase.
August 29, 2024 - Chamber of Commerce members and ambassadors attended a ribbon cutting at Diamond B Cafe in Center to celebrate and welcome business owner Marty Brandon once again to the business community on Tuesday, August 27, 2024.
Shelby County Chamber of Commerce President Deborah Chadwick spoke before presenting Marty Brandon with his Chamber plaque, “Marty, he’s been giving us coffee and great muffins for over a year now at Diamond B Coffee and here we are at Diamond B Cafe. And I know you’ve been open a few months already and we’ve all had breakfast and lunch here but I just want to welcome Diamond B Cafe to the Chamber.”
“I’m glad to be in the chamber again, you all know, we always support the chamber and they support us much that I can’t believe all of y’all are here,” said Diamond B Cafe owner Marty Brandon. “It is so exciting, I mean, I didn’t think we would get to the cafe this fast but the Lord provided opportunities.” Brandon shared how much he is loving being in the kitchen because he loves people and loves food. He did say he plans to expand to serving dinner on Thursdays along with the Fridays and Saturdays they have now.
Brandon added before giving thanks to all who attended the ribbon cutting, “It is the most fun I’ve ever had, it beats digging post holes. Diamond B Coffee is still my baby. We go over there, we had a meeting yesterday, we love it and I’m there every morning 5 o’clock but this is really exciting too.”
Diamond B Cafe offers a full breakfast menu which includes waffles, pancakes, omelets, hearty breakfast plates, and his famous quiche. For lunch, salads, sandwiches, burgers, and special lunch plates are available. Diamond B Cafe is open Monday thru Saturday 6am until 2pm and on Sundays 7am until 2pm. He has recently started serving dinner on Fridays until 5pm and Saturdays until 8pm. Check the Diamond B Cafe facebook page for daily specials. August 28, 2024 - Timpson Volunteer Fire Department received a grant from Enbridge to purchase cribbing and a gas monitor.
Cribbing is used during a rescue to stabilize a vehicle to prevent further injury to the occupant or to the rescuers. The new cribbing is now in operation on the rescue truck. The benefit of this cribbing is huge for the department for both health and safety. The new cribbing by Turtle plastic can be washed after each use and doesn’t absorb chemicals as traditional wood cribbing does. Another advantage is being able to carry more cribbing due to its stack-ability inside the rescue truck.
The gas monitor will be used to detect any harmful gases as well as possible explosions. Timpson VFD will continue to train on the use of these items.

August 27, 2024 - A new member ribbon cutting was held for CT’s Space Place on Thursday, July 11th to welcome them to the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce business community.
Chamber of Commerce President Deborah Chadwick shared, “We are excited to have CT’s Space Place as a new member.” She added, “Especially with our summer heat around here there is such a need for climate controlled. So, thank you so much for filling that need and we are excited to have you as new members.”
Daphne LaRock spoke for CT’s Space Place, “We are excited to be here, we have 26 units, we have three different sizes available and we will start renting today after we get this ribbon cuttin’ going on. We are excited and thank y’all for having us.” Unit sizes available are 5x10, 8x10, and 12x12.
CT’s Space Place, owned by Chris Tyre shared, “You’ll be able to come in 7 days a week, 7 to 7. I didn’t want to leave it all night because I think if you leave it all night, you are just asking for trouble.” Additional security on site includes a key card entry and monitored security cameras.
Added features includes each unit has a light and there is a large access door available when needed by request.
CT’s Space Place is conveniently located at 807 Hurst Street, Suite E. It is a clean and well maintained storage facility using key card controlled access which is open 7 days a week from 7am until 7pm. There are 3 different sizes of storage spaces available. August 26, 2024 - The Piney Woods Photographic Society held their monthly meeting this past Saturday in Center at the First Methodist Church. The monthly challenge were photos submitted by club members on "Patterns/Textures/Lines."
The selections that were submitted showed a group of outstanding photos. Everyone had a good time reviewing and discussing everyone's photos.

August 24, 2024 - Timpson Masonic Lodge thanks the community for their support, with the fundraiser. Friday, August 23, was a big success for lil River McAfee.
