September 12, 2017 - Shelby County Memorial Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8904 and the Auxiliary are now taking nominations for teachers of the year in grade K-5, 6-8 and 9-12.
The VFW annually recognizes the nation’s top classroom elementary, junior high and high school teachers who teach citizenship education topics regularly and promote America’s history and traditions effectively. The national award is $1.000.00 to the winner in each grade group, $1000.00 for each winning teacher’s school and an all-expenses paid trip to attend the VFW National Convention. There are also cash awards for winners at the post, district and state levels.
Anyone except for themselves or a relative can nominate a teacher.
- STEP 1: In 350 words or less, describe why you feel your nominee is deserving of the award. Be sure to describe the teacher's innovative teaching and resource development methods, as well as his or her dedication to education.
- STEP 2: Download and complete the Smart/Maher VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher Award nomination form HERE
- STEP 3: Submit the nomination form along with your explanation to VFW Post 8904 by October 31, 2017. Post winning nominees are then required to provide a one-page resume, up to five pages of documentation of their teaching experience (references, news articles, etc.) and a head and shoulder photo of themselves.

September 12, 2017 - Huxley Helping Hands, a local mission group from the Huxley community, are holding a food pantry for the residents of Shelby County. It will be held the third Saturday of September 2017. Identification and proof of residency will be required. Only (1) box per household will be given.
The food pantry is this Saturday, September 16, 2017 with sign in starting at 9am until food is gone. Hillcrest is located at 901 Southview Circle, Center, Texas.

September 11, 2017 - Hey folks, its that time again. The Dutch Oven Cookers will be cooking at Boles Field on Saturday, September 16. Bring your dutch ovens, best recipes and lets have some fun. Anyone wanting to come cook with us, come on out and let's meet, cook and eat. Our set up time is at 9:00am and pots on the table at 12:00 noon.

September 5, 2017 - Those who we lost on September 11, 2001, will forever hold a cherished place in our hearts and in the history of our nation. By a joint resolution approved December 18, 2001, (Public Law 107-89), Congress authorized the president to designate September 11 of each year as "Patriot Day" to perpetuate the memory of those who perished in the attack on America and to pursue peace and justice in the world and security at home.
Shelby County Memorial Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8904 and the Auxiliary invite the citizens of Shelby County to join them at their annual Patriot Day Observance, Monday, September 11th, 2017 at the Veterans Memorial located on the grounds of the Historic Shelby County Courthouse. The program will begin at 10:00 am and include prayer, Pledge of Allegiance, remarks by Center Fire Chief Keith Byndom, Shelby County Sheriff Willis Blackwell, Center Chief of Police Jim Albers and Jessie Griffith of ACE EMS, and a memorial wreath laying. The program will be closed with the playing of Taps.
If you cannot join us we urge all citizens to take a moment to remember the over 3000 innocent people who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. Sacrifice is meaningless without remembrance. America’s collective consciousness demands that all citizens recall and be aware of the deaths of their fellow countrymen. September 8, 2017 - The Parker family would like to thank everyone for the prayers and food, all the beautiful things that were sent. Jeff and I have so many wonderful friends and family and his funeral was a great testimony to his life. I would also like to thank Watson and Sons Funeral home for their help.
September 7, 2017 - The Shelby County Historical Society will hold its monthly meeting September 19, 2017 at 2:00 P.M. in the Shelby County Museum on Pecan Street. Our guest speaker this month will be Colleen Doggett. She will speak to us about the Early Century Ferry Landings on the Sabine River. Everyone is invited to attend.
September 7, 2017 - The Center FD and the Center Police Department responded to a call at the Tri-County Community Action to assist with removing a snake inside an office on Friday, September 1, 2017 around 1pm.
An employee with Tri-County reported glimpsing the snake but did not get a good enough view before it disappeared.
Arriving on scene to assist was Center Volunteer Fireman Waylon Griffith, Center Fireman Bobby Smith, Center PD Lieutenant Jeremy Bittick, PD Sergeant Ricky King, and PD Officer Kenneth King.
The men searched the office and adjoining office, and once the snake was located it was found to be a green garter snake. Fireman Griffith grabbed the snake and safely removed it from the premises.
Thank you emergency responders for coming regardless of the emergency.
September 6, 2017 - The Center Fire Department presented a plaque to Becky Maidic during their meeting on Tuesday, September 5, 2017. The plaque was presented in appreciation of her support of the Center Fire Department. Maidic said, “Well I cannot tell you how much I appreciate all the good work that you do, the time that you put in, the kindness that you give to everybody and what would we do without you? I can’t imagine. So, I’ll adopt each one of you but I don’t cook so…”
After the presentation, Ms. Maidic read a fun favorite answer to the all time question of why fire trucks are red? - “Because they have eight wheels and four people on them, and four plus eight makes twelve, and there are twelve inches in a foot, and one foot is a ruler, and Queen Elizabeth was a ruler, and Queen Elizabeth was also a ship, and the ship sailed the seas, and there were fish in the seas, and fish have fins, and the Finns fought the Russians, and the Russians are red, and fire trucks are always “Russian" around, so that's why fire trucks are red!"
She then presented them with a donation and asked what was the departments next project or need. Fireman Waylon Griffith gave an update that the department had just ordered 20 new radios for the firemen. Their current radios are approximately 11 years old and were in need of replacement. They once again thanked Maidic for her continued support of the department because over the years she has continually donated water, money, or whatever the need was.
During the meeting, Volunteer Fire Department Chief, Rodney Mathews also mentioned the fire department will be selling chicken plates for $7 on the square on Friday, September 29th starting at 11am. Plates will consist of leg quarters, beans, and potato salad, bread, and a drink. To purchase plates, see any Center fireman for tickets or more information.
September 5, 2017 - Jason Mitchell was the guest speaker at Tuesday's Center Rotary Club meeting today, September 5, 2017 at the John D. Windham Civic Center.
Mitchell is the City of Center Recreation Director and he spoke about the city's recreation programs saying right now soccer and football are going on. Football is actually going to draft tonight and soccer will draft on Thursday night, September 7th. He advised anybody wanting to participate in soccer can still sign up. They just need to contact Mitchell at 936-590-7196 as soon as possible.
"It looks like the football numbers are gonna be about where they were last year, " said Mitchell. "Center, Timpson, Tenaha, Garrison, and then we added Beckville in this year, are going to be in our football league."
"So, it ends up with a pretty big league. I'm gonna say it was roughly around 300 last year between the four towns that we had, that's minus Beckville. Soccer, we still have quite a few that haven't signed up that I'm still trying to get in touch with," continued Mitchell. "We'll draft this week, they will start playing about the 23rd of September. They'll run through the middle of November, as soon as that is over with, we will start signing up for basketball and basketball will start at the first of the year and it will run through when baseball and softball start. Basketball seems to be, last year alone, I think we were up about 20% in basketball."
Mitchell spoke about baseball and the tournaments which the city bids on every year. This year Dixie had an opening for an Assistant District State Director and Mitchell was offered the opportunity to fill that position and he agreed. The down fall of being the Assistant District State Director is he can no longer participate in the bidding process myself for the tournaments and someone else will have to fill that position.
In June and July of 2017 the city hosted six different weeks of tournaments. "The bids are so aggressive, everybody is wanting to get them," said Mitchell. "So, there was eight tournaments that I could actually bid on and I got five of the eight."
"Our t-ball team, 5 and 6 year old team, they were the only team to go to the World Series. This year they went to a Regional World Series. A Regional World Series consists of Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas - just those four states."
Mitchell explained, "[The Regional World Series] is on a four year rotation. This year, in 2018, it's going to be played in Texas. It could be played in Center, Texas. It's not against being played in Center, Texas. I know there's a lot of discussion that still needs to be made on whether or not that's the route that we want to go but there's definitely going to be some talk on whether or not that's something that we'd be interested in hosting." The last Regional World Series was held in Ruston, Louisiana.
September 5, 2017 - Shelby County Constables have been actively working to provide support to those in need in areas flooded due to the effects of Hurricane Harvey.
The joint efforts of local and out of state constables has presented itself in Shelby County as a Shreveport constable was in the area Friday, September 1, 2017.
Roy Cheatwood, Constable Precinct 3, Zach Warr, Constable Precinct 1, and Jon Blanco, Caddo Parish Constable, gathered outside the Justice of the Peace Precinct 1 office in Center before heading south.
Cheatwood said there have been many donors to their efforts, and although there may be others, he specifically mentioned Robin Connell (Quick Stop) who he said donated nine pallets of water, donations of water from Newberry Trucking Company, as well as 47 cases of water from Warhorse Services.
Warr remarked Brookshire Brothers had just donated a tank of fuel for the trip toward Beaumont delivering a large quantity of drinking water.
