May 12, 2017 (Photos coming soon) - Shelbyville S.W. Carter Elementary honored their hero, Ryan Moore, at an 11am ceremony at Dragon Stadium as part of Field Day. School nurse Jeane Taylor spoke about Ryan, a first grader at S.W. Carter, and described him with the word ‘brave.’
Fifth grade student John Austin Ford led a prayer for Ryan and his family before Taylor announced a surprise gift.
Ryan Moore was the honored hero for Shelbyville during their recent ‘Pennies for Patients’ fundraiser which reached it’s goal of raising $3,000 to go to child cancer research. Ryan’s father, Mark Miller, and little brother, Dallas were there to accept a gift from the student body since Ryan was in Tennessee undergoing treatments. The gift from the students was a check in the amount of $764.73 and thanks to additional generous donations, the family will be going to Dallas to visit Lego Land, Sea Life Aquarium, a Texas Rangers game, and staying at the Embassy Hotel.
During the ceremony Ryan’s Pediatrician, Dr. Kimberly Procell, spoke about Ryan and how he is her hero, “Ryan, you are my super hero. You have the courage of a lion and the strength of a thousand men. And most of all you have the love and the faith of all your friends and family.”
Also speaking was Ryan’s first grade teacher Lyndy McDonald and Ja’Rihanna Cartwright, who is a kindergartener at S.W. Carter. Cartwright wrote a letter to Ryan asking him to come to their graduation because they miss him.
To end the celebration, a balloon release was done with Ryan's family releasing the first balloons and then a 'Victory Lap' was made by the students, teachers, and community members around the track.
