April 4, 2017 - Shelby County VFW Post 8904 and the Auxiliary gathered on the downtown Center square at the Veterans memorial to honor those who served during "Operation Restore Hope" including Veteran Sean Martin.
Larry Hume, Quartermaster, opened the program, "I would like to welcome you all today on this beautiful, glorious day that the good Lord has given us," which was followed by a prayer given by Cynthia Islas, Post Chaplain.
Honoring those who served in Somalia, Hume said, "Americans consider themselves to be a compassionate people, and the United States military has a long tradition of humanitarian relief operations both within and outside the continental United States. And never has this humanitarian impulse proven more dangerous to follow than in 1992 when the United States intervened to arrest famine in the midst of an ongoing civil war in the East African country of Somalia. Ultimately hundreds of thousands were saved from starvation, but unintended involvement in Somalia’s civil strife cost the lives of thirty American Soldiers, four Marines, and eight Air Force personnel during the years of 1992 to 1994. The American military has established the conditions for peace in midst of a famine and civil war but unlike later in Bosnia, the factions were not exhausted from the fighting and were not yet willing to stop killing each other and anyone caught in the middle. There was no peace to keep and the United States withdrew all military combat troops in March of 1994. The American G.I. had, as always, done their best under a difficult circumstance to perform a complex and often confusing mission. The best military in the world can only lay the foundation for peace; it cannot create peace itself."
Hume then introduced post member, Sean Martin, who served in Somalia and asked him to hang the memorial wreath. Martin was asked to speak and he recounted his travels in Somalia which began in Mogadishu where they would make supply runs and ended near the border of Ethiopia before being pulled out of Somalia, "I was only about 15 miles from the Ethiopian border and we were up there drilling water wells, mainly just drilling water wells and acting as support for the French Foreign Legion."
Taps was presented by post member John Piersol to end the program.
April 4, 2017 - The SCSP Playday is scheduled for Saturday, April 8. Last year many Shelby County riders won awards. Pictured in the 6 and under age group are Jacob Griffin of Joaquin, winner of the all around saddle, along with other award winners including Lucinda David of Joaquin, Ryder Klein of Center, who also was pole bending champion, and Dakota Horne of Shelbyville.

April 4, 2017 - "Cultivating Joy" - Center Garden Club's 51st Annual Small Standard Flower Show this Friday, April 7th at the Center Community House is open to the public from noon until 4pm! No admission fee.
Come and view the colorful and competitive exhibition of plants, floral designs and horticulture. Garden Club members have prepared Educational Exhibits, Sculptures, and Floral Designs.
Center High School, Intermediate School, and Elementary School students will also have on display an array of beautifully creative and inspiring arrangements.
Buy a chance to win a Beautiful Urn Planter, filled with a colorful selection living plants! Members of the Center Garden Club will be selling raffle tickets for $1.00 per chance! Drawing will be held April 7, 2017, during the Flower Show.

April 4, 2017 - Approximately forty-five students participated in a hands-on floral design activity under the leadership of Center Garden Club members Ann Hitt, Janette Wittmann, Cherry Jones, and Carolyn Bounds.

Come by our office Monday through Friday from 8am to 3pm to get yours and show support for children facing this problem. Together we can make a difference in their lives!
April 4, 2017 - Responding to the increased number of citizens wanting to assist law enforcement officials and build a stronger partnership in the fight against crime, Shelby County Sheriff Willis Blackwell announced that Shelby County citizens are invited to become Associate Members of the Sheriff’s Association of Texas.
Membership invitations have been sent out and are arriving in the mail. Associate Member funding allows the Sheriffs’ Association of Texas to provide critical training, technical resources, and legislative support on key criminal justice issues to law enforcement officers across the state.
In addition, dues will be used to support crime prevention and awareness programs, promote public safety, fight drug abuse, provide additional training for sheriffs and their deputies, and provide scholarships for children of law enforcement officers.
Contributions to the Sheriffs’ Association of Texas are tax-deductible. The Associate Membership Drive helps provide the funding which is vital to the mission of making communities a safer place to live, work and play.
The Associate Membership Program was created to provide citizens with an opportunity to lend their support to more effective law enforcement and to better help local Sheriffs protect the lives and property of citizens.
“During these economic times, the need for building stronger public-private law enforcement partnership continues to escalate, and programs such as this continue to grow in importance,” said Blackwell. “I encourage every citizen receiving a membership appeal to consider joining forces with us by becoming an Associate Member. It is a valuable investment in our future.”

March 28, 2017 - New Life Church would like to express their appreciation to everyone who came out and supported the Chicken Sandwich plate fundraiser held last week. Thank you for those who pre-ordered meals. We apologize for the delay in delivery. God blessed us with good weather and blessed the fundraiser turnout. Unfortunately the main cook for the event had a flat tire that morning which delayed the food cooking. The devil may make things difficult but God will get us through.

March 24, 2017 - The Piney Woods Photographic Society (PWPS) is meant for camera enthusiasts of all skills and interests. Our goal is to help you become a better photographer and give you a place to meet others who share your passion for photography. We try to create programs and activities with information and instruction for all skill levels in an environment of support and cooperation.
Visitors are welcome to attend our meetings with or without a member.
Update: Due to Easter celebration the April meeting will be moved up to Saturday, April 8, 2017, at the First United Methodist Church, on Porter St. in Center, TX. 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. The workshop will be "Pet Photography" and the monthly Challenge will be photographs submitted depicting "Window Light"
The PWPS held its regular monthly meeting this past Saturday. There was a really good workshop taught by Janet Hughes, on Lightroom Tips and Tricks. The monthly challenge consisted of photographs submitted by members with a theme of "Texture". Some wonderful photographs were submitted and the winners are listed below. Congratulations to all!"
