February 22, 2016 - The Seven Sisters Red Hat Ladies visited all the area nursing homes on Tuesday, February 10, spreading Valentine cheer by passing out Valentines and small gifts. Pictured here, they made a special visit to member Margaret Robertson (seated) at Lakeside Assisted Living Center.
Andrew Dolan, formerly of Huxley and now a coach at Whitehouse High School, was featured in an article published by Tyler Morning Telegraph. Dolan went fishing and at the end of his fishing trip had the catch of the day, a man who was in danger of drowning on Lake Tyler. February 15, 2016 - The Center Police Department Ladies Auxiliary held a fundraiser for their scholarship program through a Valentines Day basket giveaway. The fundraiser was held until Saturday, February 13, 2016 in front of Brookshire Brothers in Center.
At 12:20pm the drawing was held and David Hailey, Brookshire Brothers Manager, drew the winning name from the box. District Judge Charles "Brick" Dickerson was the winner of the baskets with contents valued at over $250.
February 15, 2016 - A political forum was held at the Sunshine Frontier Cafe in Timpson on Thursday, February 11, 2016. Debra Pate Smith, former Timpson Mayor, spoke with Timpson residents and potential city council and mayor candidates about the city finances, filing to run as a candidate and the importance of backing those seeking election collectively and not splitting the vote.
Yvonne Ramsey, city council member, was also at the event and is running for council once again. Other possible candidates mentioned during the meeting were Tracy Hooper, who may be seeking election as mayor, and Al Skinner who may be running for a council position.
The importance of voting was expressed throughout the event, as with all local elections, one vote can make all the difference in who wins an election.
February 15, 2016 - First Vice-President Linda Anderson called the Golden Harvest Ministries Club to order with 30 members and 2 guests attending the February 15 meeting. Harold Hanson led the singing of two favorites and Happy Birthday to Harold Warr, Odessa Link, and Betty Merony who was celebrating her birthday that day. February anniversary greetings went to members Naomi and Harold Hanson, Leigh Porterfield, and guest Brandi Emanis.
Program Chairman Linda Anderson introduced Sherry Harding, executive director of Shelby County Outreach Ministries, and Brandi Emanis, director of the senior food program, who explained the wide variety of services provided by SCOM.
The Golden Harvest Ministries Club meets at 11:30 a.m. on the 3rd Monday of each month in the Fellowship Hall of First Baptist Church in Center, Texas. Visitors are welcome to bring a covered-dish and enjoy the program and fellowship.

February 15, 2016 - VFW Post 8904 and Auxiliary members braved the elements for an event held on the historic Shelby County Courthouse Monday, February 15, 2016 in observation of the USS Maine sinking and loss of the lives of its passengers during the Spanish-American War.
Just before 10am, those present gathered at the Shelby County Veterans Memorial while Larry Hume, Quartermaster, recited a speech as a strong wind blew and rain fell from the skies.
"We're here to commemorate the 118th anniversary of the sinking of the USS Maine in the Havana Harbor, which led to the Spanish-American War," said Hume. "The Spanish-American War only lasted about four months, but from that war came the Veterans of Foreign Wars. It was not called that in those days, but from those veterans that were not being taken care of by the government our organization was formed."
Hume continued and said Teddy Roosevelt told his troops as they were mustering out, "Enjoy the next 15 days, because after that you will be forgotten."
Taps was played as presented by John Piersol and the wreath in honor of the USS Maine was visible on the Veterans Memorial.
Sherry Riley, Veterans Service Officer, was present for the event and Hume remarked at the end of the event that her position is now full-time with her hours at the historic courthouse being from 7:30am to 3:30pm Monday through Friday.
"If you know any veterans that need any help with paperwork and so forth, please send them to Sherry," said Hume.
February 11, 2016 - The members of Center Garden Club cleaned and refreshed their garden at the Community House. This is in preparation for our annual Flower Show in April. Those attending were Judy Matthews, Lisa Albers, Rachel Campbell, Carolyn Bounds, and Jackie Hancock.

February 11, 2016 - International Flower Show Judges and Hemphill Garden Club members Betty Eddleman and Nell Anderson explained terms utilized in the scale of points in judging a floral design to Center Garden Club members at their February 10 meeting at the Community House in Center, Texas.
They also critiqued a floral design by Carole Ann Chance by using principles and elements of design, creativity, expression, and artistic concept. The program was in preparation for Center Garden Club's 50th Flower Show which is free and open to the public from noon to 4:00 p.m. on Friday, April 22, at the Community House, 423 San Augustine Street, Center, Texas.

February 10, 2016 - The Eta Rho Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi hosted their first annual Dresses for Dreams event on Thursday, February 4, 2016 at the Center Community House and was a huge success with over 100 formal dresses collected. Dresses collected included ball gowns, cocktail dresses and prom type dresses.
A main feature of the event was an opportunity to win a Louis Vuitton handbag. Congratulations to the lucky winner, Christi Foster.
On Saturday, March 5, Eta Rho will hold a Dress Sale at the Community House from 10am until 2pm. All dresses will be sold at reasonable and affordable prices and is open to everyone! A lot of beautiful dresses were collected during the Dresses for Dreams fundraiser. Anyone who will be needing a formal type dress for either Prom or Poultry Festival Queen contest, please come look at the inventory!
Anna Lee, an Eta Rho member, said, "We are very thankful to all of our sponsors. They were a huge part in making this event such a successful fundraiser and Community Service project. " Sponsors for the event were: Dr and Mrs. Clayton Windham, Boles Feed, The Loft, McAdams Propane, B&W Chipping, Harkness Litter, Shelby Vet Associates, and High Roller Whitetails.
Special recognition goes to The Balcony which is owned by Traci Willoughby. The Balcony offered to donate a brand new formal for a donation of $50 for those who didn't have a formal dress to donate. Other local businesses who helped in making this event a success were Pineywoods Beverage and The Sign Shop.

Lisa McAdams and Linda Miller are members of the Preceptor Upsilon chapter of Beta Sigma Phi, and have helped Eta Rho tremendously in making this new fundraiser and community event a success!
Eta Rho, Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi is a non-profit women's organization. It is comprised of young, local women who raise money with fundraisers like Dresses for Dreams, to enable them to be able to give back to the community. Eta Rho also gives a scholarship each year in memory of Jenny Malory Wright.
