August 20, 2015 - A ribbon cutting event hosted by the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors was held on Thursday, August 20, 2015 at the office of Luquette Chiropractic in Center.
Meg Camp, Shelby County Chamber of Commerce Ambassador, introduced Dr. David Luquette, DC who was excited to speak about his new location, and introduced some of his staff members
"I've been in business for over 20 years and this community is a major part of who I am, and I hope that we can grow with this new location to the point to where we have more services," said Dr. Luquette.
Currently the location will be open on Tuesday and Thursday with the Nacogdoches location being open Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Dr. Luquette was very excited about the Nacogdoches Medical Center - Center Emergency Department and their ability to provide x-rays.
"We're hoping to be one of those chiropractors that make a difference in a small town, because you work with the medical community," said Dr. Luquette.

August 2015 Challenge Winners with theme, Night/Moon/Stars, were 1st place - Bobbie Wood; 2nd place - Billie Jones; and 3rd place (tied) LeaAnn Robertson and Sheila Harris.
The Piney Woods Photographic Society is meant for camera enthusiasts of all skills and interests. Our goal is to help you become a better photographer and give you a place to meet others who share your passion for photography. We try to create programs and activities with information and instruction for all skill levels in an environment of support and cooperation.
Visitors are welcome to attend our meetings with or without a member.
The next meeting will be September 19th. The workshop will feature "Photoshop Tips & Tricks" with a monthly challenge of "Barns".
The August meeting was held this past Saturday with a monthly Challenge of: "Night/Moon/Stars". Members submitted photos for critiquing featuring long exposures/night shots.
The PWPS would like to welcome new member Sharon Peace.

August 19, 2015 - Lowrance Electronics were in Center Tuesday evening, August 18th at the Shelby County Bass Angler's August meeting.
Lowrance gave a very informative seminar on the latest innovative trends in sonar and imaging systems in the marine industry. In addition, individuals brought their personal electronics for updates and setups to fit their needs. The meeting was open to the public and a very good turnout was welcomed with a meal and refreshments by the club. Angelina, Nacogdoches, Shelby, San Augustine, Panola, and Sabine counties were represented with anglers eager to learn more about the products.

August 19, 2015 - The Texas Extension Education Association (TEEA), XYZ Homemakers Club of Shelby County attended the annual District 5 TEEA Cultural Arts Conference in Tyler on July 21, 2015. Nine Shelby County members attended this event and enjoyed art demonstrations and a wonderful lunch. Dot Golding conducted an art demonstration on painting a silk scarf. In addition, members showcased their cultural arts talents in categories such as photography, quilts, recyclables, crafts, painting and more.
The arts were judged and the following Shelby County members placed as follows: Beaula Webster – 1st place in the recyclables category with her quilt made from men’s ties, Ellen Manning – 1st place in the tablecloths category with her hand-woven tablecloth, and Dot Golding – 1st place in the crochet category with her framed crocheted butterfly.

August 19, 2015 - Joe Anderson announced that it was time to start the Golden Harvest Ministries Club meeting on Aug. 17, 2015 in the Fellowship Hall of the First Baptist Church . W. A. Moore gave the opening prayer and Harold Hanson led the singing while Alice West played the piano. We sang “I Stand Amazed” and My Jesus I Love Thee.” We sang Happy Birthday to Maudie Warr and then Happy Anniversary to Mike and Linda Bordelon who have been married for 50 years and Jim and Ann Forbes who have been married for 62 year.
Mr. Anderson recognized all the visitors who were Kathy Childs, Makayla Mayo Shirley Cunningham, Cindy Brown, nora Robins Susan Kruger, Bill and Jane Langenbacher and Carrie, Emily, Jake and Jared Jenkins. Then Mr. Anderson blessed the food and asked a special blessing for our program.
Jim Forbes introduced Hans Polk who told us his feeling about the Holocaust and what he feels about conditions in the world today. The fact that the air conditioner was not working in the room contributed to our feeling very heated about what happens when there is hatred amongst people. The world has not learned one thing from history. We were challenged to not take our freedom for granite as people continue to not seek to love and help others.
We had the minutes of the last meeting. A small quilt was given as a door prize and Frances Chance won it! Ann Forbes presented the Prayer Report and we agreed to pray for the concerns at home. David Bain led our closing prayer.

August 18, 2015 (Album1, Album2) - The Hope Clinic Incorporated hosted a "Back to School Bash" at the Tenaha Youth Center on Saturday, August 15, 2015 which had a large number of students show up to participate.
A great deal of support for the event was garnered through many businesses and individuals throughout Shelby County as well as a final $1,500 donation to send preparations over the top. As the event reached it's midpoint over 200 students had already been provided with their school supplies for the coming year.
Mike Belgard, Hope Project CEO, explained how the event began and it's goal is to not only reach students of Tenaha, but the county as well.
"We decided a few months ago that one of the things we could do to help with the community here, and the whole county, this is not just a Tenaha thing this is a countywide and area wide thing that we could best help students by helping them make sure they had proper school supplies."
Belgard stated the generous donations made it possible for the project to provide supplies for at least 300 students. Belgard commended Brandii Polley, Chief Operating Officer; health officers Maria Solas, CWO; and Loraine Osby, CWO; who led the charge to bring the "Back to School Bash" to fruition, "[They] asked me about it and I said, 'Go for it, I think it's a great idea,' and so we had a chicken spaghetti dinner, we sold plates to help pay for some of the supplies."
Polley explained for a few years the Hope Project has been participating in a back to school bash and decided to bring the support to Shelby County, "Miss Loraine came into my office she said we always participated in Panola County's Back to School Bash, she said we need to do something for Shelby County. I said, 'Let's get the planning going,' and it just took off from there."
An increase in resources for Shelby County is the motivation behind the program, and helping parents who are struggling to provide those much needed school supplies for their children.
Polley said it took the efforts of Osby and Solas working together with Hope Project management and the many contributions received to make the event a success.
"Next year we're hoping to have it bigger to where we can attract more residents to come and get supplies. We're aiming, hopefully, toward Center since that is the county seat just to bring people together for this big community event," said Polley.
Osby said the contributors were very willing to participate and that it was "amazing." The event was hosted at the Tenaha Youth Center through the generosity of the organization as well as the city's McNeil Park.
During the event a large variety of door prizes were given to students including bicycles, backpacks, additional supplies and much more. (See additional photos at the following links Album1, Album2)
August 18, 2015 - A new tradition was unveiled Monday, August 18, 2015 on Center ISD Campus when Will Lucas, Shelby Savings Bank president, removed the cover off of the new 'Shelby Savings Bank Drive' street sign while bank employees and Rotary members watched.
In support of the Rotary Club's Fun for Funds benefit auction which helps provide scholarships to Center ISD graduating seniors, Center ISD donated to the auction "Name that Sign" which gave the winning bidder naming rights to the street connecting Roughrider Drive to Timpson Highway for one year. The street passes in front of the Tennis Courts and Roughrider Stadium. For one year the sign will display Shelby Savings Bank Drive on both ends until next years Fun for Funds Benefit Auction places the item up for someone to claim naming rights.
The Fun for Funds auction was held March 24, 2015 and Shelby Savings Bank won with a $900 bid. The Fun for Funds auction raised over $33,000 for scholarships which is managed by the Catherine Pinkston Roughrider Scholarship Foundation. As of March 2015, the Roughrider Scholarship Foundation (RSF) has presented 1,544 scholarships totaling $1,213,800 to graduating C.H.S. students and is funded by donations, not just from Rotary, but from the community.
The RSF gave out over 100 scholarship to 2015 graduating seniors which wasn't included in the previous total. For more information about the RSF, visit online at http://roughriderscholarship.org/
August 17, 2015 - A special mass was celebrated August 16 at St. Therese Catholic Church in honor of Mike and Linda Bordelon's 50th wedding anniversary. Fr. Jose Luis Vidarte gave special blessings for continued years of good health in God's grace. Linda and Mike were married August 14, 1965 at St Joseph Catholic Church in Marksville, Louisiana.
August 17, 2015 - Fannie Brown Booth Library was selected to receive a donation by Hochheim Prairie Farm Mutual Branch 110. Every year HPFM branch 110 donates money back to our community. August 14, 2015 - Mike Bordelon demonstrated various methods of raising queen bees and showed a video on the bullet and powder method at the August 12 Shelby County Bee Club.
Mary Reed, Apiary Inspector for Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, will be presenting "Texas Beekeeping and Honey Regulations" to our club on Wednesday, September 23rd beginning at 11:30 a.m. in the active Shelby County Courthouse, 2nd floor meeting room.
Ms. Reed holds a B.S. from the University of Florida in Entomology and specializes in bee diseases.
James and Cindy Dotson, who own and operate an Apiary in Hemphill, Texas, gave Linda and Mike Bordelon a bottle of their homemade Raspberry Meade in celebration of their upcoming 50th anniversary. They will present a porgram in the future on "Meade Making."
Anyone interested in learning more about bees may attend. There are no dues.
