February 27, 2015 - Gulf War Veterans were honored by members of VFW Post 8904 and Ladies Auxiliary in front of the Shelby County Veterans Memorial on the Center square Friday, February 27, 2015.
The ceremony was led by Larry Hume, Post Quartermaster, and an opening prayer was given by Gene Hutto, Post Chaplain.
Hume told of how the Gulf War, codenamed Operation Desert Storm, began on January 17, 1991 when coalition forces from 34 nations led by the United States began the aerial bombardment in Iraq. This was in response to Iraq’s invasion and annexation of Kuwait. A week later on February 24th, a ground assault began the liberation of Kuwait and advancement into Iraqi territory.
"When the war ended on February 28th, 1991, 148 Americans had died in battle, which included 15 females. There were also 145 nonbattle deaths and 467 wounded. In their honor today we're proud to have Desert Storm Veteran Sean Martin who was in the United States Navy Seabees to place out wreath," said Hume.
Martin hung the wreath and Hume explained the wreath would remain at the Veterans Memorial until the close of business day. "Our presence here today is a small but heartfelt thank you for the Desert Storm Veterans who died during the war and those who survived and have since passed away and those still living. If it were not for you and all these familiar faces in front of me, this day would have gone by unnoticed in Shelby County, Texas. The service and sacrifices of these veterans would not have been remembered, and we cannot let any group of veterans be forgotten, that's our charge and I thank you again for caring enough to be here today."
As a final tribute Taps was played as presented by Mike Langford, Post Commander.
February 24, 2015 - The Woman's Reading Club met in the home of Mrs. Linda Anderson on February 19. President Donna Holt presided and welcomed two guests, Mrs. Winola Ellis and Mrs. Cindy Brown.
Following the business meeting, hostess and program leader Mrs. Linda Anderson reviewed The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot. Henrietta Lacks was an African-American woman Who was the unwitting source of cells (taken from her malignant biopsy in 1951) which Johns Hopkins researchers cultured to create the first- known immortal cell line called the Hela (a combination of the first two letters of Henrietta's first and last name).
Henrietta's immortal cells, Hela, grew very aggressively and continue to grow still, immortally, leading to scientific breakthroughs such as polio vaccine, cloning, gene mapping, cancer and AIDS medications, and to innumerable other scientific pursuits past, present, and future worldwide.
Mrs. Anderson's review was both informative and moving. Following the program, she treated the club to lovely assorted refreshments which she had prepared for the occasion.
February 23, 2015 - The Shelby County 4-H Photography contest was held on February 10, 2015 in the Shelby County Courthouse. We had a record number of participants ranked by the age divisions of Senior, Intermediate and Junior and judged in 15 different categories.
The overall winner of the county contest was junior 4-H’er Liela Klein with her photograph entitled “Kneel at the Cross” in the Catch All category.
The next show is at the district level and it will be conducted on April 25, 2015 at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches. Each youth that entered a photograph at the county level may enter the same photo at the district level, if desired. Senior age division photographs that placed first at the county level will automatically advance to the state level to be judged.
The photographs are on exhibit on the first floor of courthouse. Please stop by and check out the great job these youth did in taking their photographs.
A special thank you to Ms. Charity Arwine for leading the 4-H photography project and for sharing excellent and invaluable photography skills with the 4-H project members.

February 22, 2015 - The Pineywoods Photographic Society (PWPS) held their monthly meeting this past Saturday, with the critique competition being "REDS." There was a great workshop co-hosted by Janet Hughes and Dennis Harris on "Using Flash". This was enjoyed by all in attendance considering the extreme discussions that took place. Thank you Janet and Dennis.

Our goal is to help you become a better photographer and give you a place to meet others who share your passion for photography. We try to create programs and activities with information and instruction for all skill levels in an environment of support and cooperation.Visitors are welcome to attend our meetings with or without a member.
February 17, 2015 - The Golden Harvest Ministries Club February meeting was held Monday the 16th in the Fellowship Hall of the First Baptist Church . Joe Anderson brought the meeting to order and noted that we had good attendance in spite of the cold, rainy weather. He called on Danny Brown to lead the opening prayer. Harold Hanson led us as we sang “I Stand Amazed” and “Jesus loves me.” Alice West played the piano as we sang.
Those who had a birthday this month were Odessa Link, Betty Meroney and Harold Warr. Harold and Naomi Hanson reported that they had their 61st wedding anniversary. We sang for these people and had them go first in the lunch line. W. A. Moore asked the blessing on the food. Meal time was relaxed and the food was delightful.
Linda Anderson, Program Chair, announced the program which was what Mr. Hanson called the Burkson Quartet. That is Bill and Joyce Funderburk and Harold and Naomi Hanson. Joyce Funderburk accompanied and sang alto while the others sang the other parts. The audience greatly enjoyed each number and felt praise along with the performers.
Minutes of the last meeting were read. Betty Green gave the financial report of income and expenses. Joe Anderson read a thank-you note from Frances Chance. He assigned one person out of each group of 10 members to call each person in their group and to remind them of the next meeting. There was a report of trips. We passed the dead line to sign up for the next trip and we are beginning to plan another trip for June.
Ann Forbes went over the Prayer List and announced the Women’s Conference. Linda Bordelon conducted a drawing for 4 door prizes. They were won by Mary Ivy, David Bain, Louise Hayden and Bobbie Nutt. David Bain led in closing prayer.

February 20, 2015 - Shelby Savings Bank donated a cooler with fishing gear and SSB caps and coozies to be used as a prize in the 2015 Logansport Sand Bass Tournament.
The tournament hosted by the Logansport Chamber of Commerce will be held on Saturday, March 14th on the Sabine River at the beginning of The Toledo Bend Reservoir.

February 19, 2015 - VFW Post 8904 & Ladies Auxiliary held a wreath laying ceremony on Tuesday, February 17, 2015 in remembrance of the sinking of the USS Maine and its crew in Havana Harbor 117 years ago.
Following a prayer led by Gene Hutto, VFW Chaplain, Larry Hume, Post Quartermaster spoke about the USS Maine and its crew.
"117 years ago the USS Maine exploded in the harbor of Havana Cuba, killing 266 American crewmen and marines. Spain was blamed for that explosion and the Spanish-American War began as a result. Less than four months later the United States won a decisive victory. It was the first war the United States had fought outside its shores. 3,000 American military were lost, mostly from yellow fever, typhoid and fighting in the jungles."
Hume quoted Teddy Roosevelt who said to his troops as they mustered out, "Enjoy the next 15 days because after that you will be forgotten."
He stated they were forgotten and because of the United States Government's refusal of proper medical the veterans banded together, "These veterans banded together in organizations that would become the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States. These are our forefathers of our organization."
Newton Johnson Jr., Sr. Vice Commander, laid the wreath on the veterans memorial and Taps was featured as presented by Mike Langford , Post Commander.
February 19, 2015 - Dr. Jerry Hopkins was the guest speaker at the Shelby County Historical Society meeting held on February 17, 2015.
A Growing Adventure: A History of Clever Creek Baptist Church is a book written by Dr. Hopkins which he presented during the meeting explaining the beginning and continued life and ministry of the church.
Dr. Hopkins is seen at right as he attended the Shelby County Historical Museum.
February 19, 2015 - Woodmen of the World presented a donation for Agriculture Education Day on Tuesday, February 17, 2015.
The event will be held at the Shelby County Sheriff's Posse Rodeo Arena on May 1, 2015 and will have a variety of activities for students to learn from.
Venora McSwain, Woodmen of the World Representative, is pictured at left with Will Lucas, Chair Committee of Agriculture Education Day, as she presented a $500 check on behalf of Woodmen of the World for the event.
February 18, 2015 - Local wildlife expert and Cryptozoologist Jeff Stewart is once again in the center of attention. The Animal Planet's Finding Bigfoot has set it's sights on East Texas and enlisted the expertise and experiences of Mr. Stewart. While Mr. Stewart could not divulge any particulars of the filming schedule or locations he did say he is quickly gaining a huge amount of respect for those in television.
Mr. Stewart has filmed with Destination America, Discovery and Animal Planet so far and will be a key note speaker at the upcoming Phylosophenomina Festival in Glen Rose Tx. On March 22.
