July 20, 2023 - ETPOA (East Texas Peace Officers Association) thanks everyone who supports this organization through donations and purchase of raffle tickets as well as other types of support.
The recipients received the scholarships during the ETPOA annual training conference in June. The conference was held in Nacogdoches, Texas at the Fredonia Hotel and Conference Center.
Those who received scholarships include Avery Faulkner, Shelbyville High School; Cody Claude, Nacogdoches High School; and Abigail Richardson, Douglass High School. These three recent graduates received $1,000 scholarships through the East Texas Peace Officers’ Association
July 18, 2023 - The Piney Woods Photographic Society held their regular monthly meeting this past Saturday at the First Methodist Church in Center, Texas. There was a workshop given on “Tips and Techniques on How to Photograph Water in Motion” in preparation for next month's challenge. The July Challenge were photographs submitted by members for voting and critique on “Night Photography.”
The PWPS goal is to help you become a better photographer and give you a place to meet others who share your passion for photography. Featuring programs and activities with information and instruction for all skill levels in an environment of support and cooperation.
Visitors are always welcome to attend our meetings.

July 14, 2023 - Happy Tails Adoption Center is hosting their Summer Fundraiser. Donations of $5 receive one ticket and donations of $20 receive five tickets. Winners will be announced on Monday, July 17, 2023.
Prizes are a recliner from Blake’s Furniture valued at $500, a Consuela purse from Mooney’s valued at $259, or a custom made pet flag designed by Betty Mooney valued at $40.

July 13, 2023 - The Center Woman’s Reading Club officers met in the lovely home of club President Alease Copelin to make plans for the upcoming 2023-2024 year. Other reading club officers include First Vice President Bonnie Lucus, Second Vice President Dottie West, Recording Secretary Stephanie Elswick, Corresponding Secretary Fannie Watson, Treasurer Ginia Hooper, and Parliamentarian Janene Walker.
The program theme for this year is books written by Texas authors. Club meetings include a club business meeting, a book report, and a time for refreshments and fellowship.
The Center Woman’s Reading Club was organized in 1896 making it among the oldest continually meeting clubs in Shelby county.

July 12, 2023 - General Shelters has been celebrating all year long their 50th Anniversary which is officially in October. On Monday, July 10, a drawing was held for two buildings in contention for being the official 50th Anniversary Limited Edition building of General Shelters. Employees were the deciders on which building would win and at the same time of voting for the winning building they were entered into a drawing to win the building they selected. The two buildings built special for the company's 50th Anniversary were 'The Sun Shed' and 'The Garden Studio' which are both 8 ft. by 12 ft..
David Koonce, President/CEO of General Shelters said, "We are celebrating our 50th year all year long. And we've built two buildings and our employees have voted on their favorite building to be able to represent our 50th anniversary limited edition building. And the winner is Sun Shed." After announcing which building received the most votes, a drawing was held to see which two employees won their favorite building.

General Shelters will build only 50 of each building and they will be sent out to their distributors.

July 5, 2023 - To honor America and the freedoms we all enjoy, and to celebrate the significance of Independence Day, local attorneys gathered in the upstairs courtroom of the Historic 1885 Courthouse on Friday, June 30, 2023.
Attorney Deck Jones thanked everyone for attending the reading and explained it is a goal of the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association for a formal reading of the United States Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights to be performed annually in each of the 254 Texas counties.
Jones then introduced the attorneys participating in the reading to be Stephen Shires, Scott Peal, April Prince, Kim Ryan, and Jeff Adams. He then went on to give some history leading up to the writing of the Declaration of Independence and its signing by 56 courageous men. The Declaration contains three sections: a general statement of natural rights theory and the purposed of government; list of grievances against the British King; and finally the declaration of independence from England.
Next, the group read the Bill of Rights which are the first 10 amendments of the Constitution.

July 3, 2023 - Farmers State Bank’s inaugural 'East Texas Photo' show was the focus of many on Monday, July 3rd with the winners being announced. In the four categories, a total of 76 entries were received. Categories were Landscape/Nature, Fine Art, Human Interest and Spirit of Texas.
Best of Show was awarded to BJ Wood’s photo “A Boy’s Best Friend.”

June 29, 2023 - Timpson Frontier Days, Presented by Timpson Chamber of Commerce, continues it’s 2023 lineup of events this Friday evening, June 30, 2023.
Thursday evening the carnival began at 5pm, and at 6pm a party in the streets under the tent with DJ Berio.
Friday, June 30, the carnival starts once again at 5pm, and the Gospel Concert begins at First Baptist Church with the Calvary Boys and Southern Plainsmen performing. Tickets are sold at the door and are $10.
Downtown entertainment with dancing in the streets will be provided once again by DJ Berio from 7pm until 10pm, get your dancing shoes ready!
Saturday, July 1, the Frontier Days car show will begin at 9am. The parade lineup will also take place at 9am in front of Timpson High School, beginning at 9am and the parade will begin at 10am with welcome and opening prayer at 11am, as well as introduction of guests. Washer pitching will start after the parade in SoSo Park.
Throughout the day Saturday there will be food and craft booths open, carnival rides and entertainment, including David Wonders featuring balloon art and magic shows.
Timpsin ISD Twirlers and Cheerleaders perform at 7pm, followed by the cake auction at 8pm. The band will then perform for the rest of the evening until 11pm. Headline entertainment includes Chris Wells with special guest Trey Wilson an hometown celebrity Jason Pate on the drums.
Sunday, July 2, a community service will be held downtown under the tent at 6pm. Bring your lawn chairs and enjoy worshipping the Lord together. A community that can worship together, can live together.

June 28, 2023 - Tuxedo Springs opened their doors to the Shelby County Chamber of Commence and its ambassadors for a new member ribbon cutting on June 2, 2023.
The venue owned by Layla and Jose Solis has been in the making since construction began in July of 2021.
Chamber of Commerce President Deborah Chadwick gave the welcome to the new chamber members, the venue owners Layla and Jose Solis. “It’s so fantastic! Y’all have done an awesome job and welcome to the chamber.” Chadwick presented the owners a Chamber of Commerce plaque to display and then invited them to speak.
Jose Solis said, “We are very excited about this place. It took a lot of effort, a lot of planning. Actually, we thought about this way before the covid time. But then covid came and we put the brakes on everything, just like a lot of people did with their projects.” He continued, “I think everything got started on July 6th of [20]21 and so it’s taken a long time because this has been done in a slow process.” Solis described the area as being all trees before they began which meant they had to clear the area and make a road. As much of the project was done by Solis' family as could be done. The concrete and the main structure was contracted.
He continued, “It holds, we are thinking about a hundred and fifty people comfortably. It’s primarily for weddings, anniversaries, really any type of party you want to use the place.” He gave a description of the venue which includes a bridal room and a kitchen with plans for a bar to be coming soon. Layla Solis expanded on the plans which also include an outside area in the near future along with developing the springs near the venue for photography opportunities.
She also added, “We are just happy that you guys would come out here.”
The last information they shared regarding the venue was the source of the it’s name. Jose said, “So, Tuxedo Springs. Tuxedo, it goes with this type of venue. That’s the name of our dog and she loves the dog.” Layla explained, “He’s a Pom[eranian]. He’s a black Pom with white so we named him Tuxedo. He would always run out to the springs.”
After the ribbon cutting, everyone enjoyed refreshments while visiting and taking in the venue and its view.

June 27, 2023 - Timpson Frontier Days Pony Express riders are racking up the miles as they continued to spread the word Tuesday, June 27, 2023, being ambassadors to the event inviting people from far and wide to attend Frontier Days on Thursday, June 29 through Sunday, July 2.

Representing the Pony Express was Braxten Box, who delivered an invitation to the citizens of Timpson which was received by Mayor of Timpson Debra Smith.

The Pony Express then hit the road and traveled to Tenaha to offer a greeting and invitation to the citizens of Tenaha. Box presented an invitation to Tenaha and receiving the invite on behalf of Tenaha citizens was Mayor O’Neal Jones.
From there the Pony Express headed out to invite the citizens of Carthage to join in the Frontier Days fun.
