Chili Cook-off Winners - Ashley and Jeremy Snider
January 24, 2023 - The Shelbyville Volunteer Fire Department had a good turnout despite drizzling rain for their first Annual Community Night.
Three contests were held with the following top winners: Ashley and Jeremy Snider in the Chili Cook-off; Cody and Cayden Price in the Cornhole Tournament; and Blake Campbell and Megan Teske in the 42 Tournament.

Thank you to all who signed up to play, who brought chili, or who made donations to the fire department. Your support is greatly appreciated and helped make Community Night a success!
A special thank you to the Chili Cook-off judges who were Sheriff Kevin Windham, Tom Jenkins, and Jon Collins.
The fire department hopes to see everyone again next year on the 3rd Saturday in January!

Cornhole Tournament Winners - Cody and Cayden Price
January 24, 2023 - The students listed on the Dean's List of Academic Honors at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas, are undergraduates who have achieved a grade point average of at least 3.5 out of a perfect 4.0 in all work attempted while enrolled in not less than 12 semester hours.
The university would like to recognize the following students for earning the honor for the Fall 2022 semester:

January 24, 2023 - The Center Garden Club met at the home of Carolyn Bounds on January 11, 2023. 12 members were in attendance and were treated to a wonderful lasagna lunch with delicious pie for dessert. The program was given by CGC President Carolyn Bounds. The topic was about the use of different items as makeshift vases. Bounds explained that inexpensive bowls or vintage items can be used as beautiful centerpieces when flowers or greenery are added.

January 23, 2023 - (Photo Album) - An MLK Walk/Parade was held on Monday, January 16, 2023, honoring the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and to continue carrying his message into the future.
Participants gathered at H&S Discount Foods on Shelbyville Street where the event began with an opening prayer. From there, a parade of marchers began their route to Martin Luther King Drive where the procession continued until reaching Perry Sampson Park.

A program was then held in the park which featured several speakers, and was accompanied by two groups of Praise Dancers.
Ray Dean McCollister presented a recitation of Dr. King's, "I have a dream," speech without any script and apparently all from memory.
Once the program was completed, everyone shared refreshments in the Perry Sampson Park pavilion.

January 23, 2023 - The Piney Woods Photographic Society held their first monthly meeting of 2023 this past Saturday, January 21st. The new year was kickstarted by the "Photographer"s Choice" Challenge with 22 photo submissions by club members for critique and favorite voting. What a great way to start the new year!
The PWPS holds a regular meeting the third Saturday of the month, 9 a.m.- 12 p.m at the First United Methodist Church, 211 Cora St., Center, Texas. There is a workshop presented and a members challenge each month. There are memberships available, but visitors are always welcome to attend and check things out.
The Piney Woods Photographic Society is for camera enthusiasts of all skills and interests. Our goal is to help you become a better photographer and give you a place to meet others who share your passion for photography Featuring programs and activities with information instruction for all skill levels in an environment of support and cooperation.

January 18, 2023 - Maisyn Moore, 11th grade student at Joaquin HS was our VFW Post 8904 co-winner in this year’s Voice of Democracy contest.
Maisyn went on to win First Place at the District 19 level competition and on Saturday, January 14, 2023 she and her mother Courtney attended the district winter meeting at Lufkin VFW Post 1836. There Maisyn recited her award winning essay and was presented with an engraved plaque and check for $500.
She also won a $1,500 scholarship from the Department of Texas VFW. VFW Post 8904 is so very proud of her.
September 26, 2022 - The Shelby County Veterans Office is pleased to announce its new office location. The office is now located in the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Office building, 266 Nacogdoches Street, Center, Texas 75935.
Office hours are as follows:
- Monday and Tuesday 8:30-3:00pm: Walk-in (no appointment necessary)
- Wednesday 8:30am-3:00pm: appointments are recommended as this is when visits are made to homebound or nursing home Veterans
- Thursday and Friday 8:30am-2:00pm: Claims only (appointments are necessary)

January 2, 2023 - Organized 37 years ago, an annual Center cookie exchange group met on December 11, 2022 to share their recipes, to sample one another’s cookies, and to take home eleven packages of holiday cookies to share with family and friends. Two of the founding members are still participating: Joann Alexander and Carolyn Bounds. Members were grateful to Anna Stuever for creating the 2022 recipe book. Hostess Carolyn Bounds welcomed members that evening and paid tribute to former members and to the younger generation who are now a part of this long tradition.

January 2, 2023 - Center Garden Club held its December luncheon meeting at the Center Country Club during which treasurer Robbie Kerr presented Lisa Albers, a member of Center Police Department Ladies Auxiliary, with a donation to Operation Blue Santa.
The club also celebrated club member Janette Wittmann’s very special birthday with a delicious cake, glowing candles, and many warm wishes.
