January 24, 2022 - The Fannie Brown Booth Library will not have Preschool Story Time or Crafternoons this Wednesday, January 26th due to high Covid case numbers.

January 19, 2022 - The Piney Woods Photographic Society held their first meeting for the 2022 season this past Saturday. There was a workshop on "Depth of Field" presented by Billie Jones and the January Challenge was "Photographer's Choice.” These were photographs submitted by club members for critique and  voting by members with suggestions on how to make the photo better.

January 17, 2022 - The Center Garden Club enjoyed a program on plant propagation on Wednesday, January 12th at the Agri-Life Building.  

Club President Carolyn Bounds led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance, business meeting and prayer followed by lunch served by hostesses Pam Sykes and Rita Hughes.

After lunch, Carolyn presented an informative program on plant propagation which included the process of starting new plants by various methods including seeds, divisions, and leaf rooting. She provided cuttings for each member to choose to take home to nurture for starting new plants. The members will nurture the new plants to be ready for their April plant sale.

Other members in attendance were Robbie Kerr, Carole Ann Chance, Cherry Jones, Janette Whittmann, Vanessa Davis, and Cathy Williams.

January 17, 2022 - Reagan Hovey, son of Todd and Mary Hovey and husband of Miranda Prnka Hovey, has been awarded a membership to Baylor Law Review. During Reagan’s first three quarters of attending Baylor Law School, he has remained in the top 15% of his class.

Reagan is a graduate of Joaquin Highschool (2017) and Texas A & M University (2020).

January 3, 2022 - The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) invites faith and secular communities to stand with us during January, which is National Human Trafficking Prevention Month. DFPS makes fighting against human trafficking a priority, and strives to improve awareness, services, and prevention efforts to help eradicate trafficking in Texas.

January 3, 2022 - Daniel Chavez received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Film and TV Production during the 2021 Fall semester at Sam Houston State University. He graduated with Magna Cum Laude honors.

During his time at Sam Houston State University, he also received the honor of making the President's Honor Roll and the Dean's List. Chavez is a 2018 graduated of Center High School.

December 31, 2021 - Sheriff Kevin W. Windham is proud to announce Corporal Chad Hooper as the 2021 Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Employee of the Year

Deputy Hooper began his career at the SCSO in March 2019. He was promoted to Corporal in May 2021. He graduated from the East Texas Police Academy in Kilgore in 2018.

“I am honored to serve the citizens of Shelby County. My grandfather, Don Hooper was a lifetime resident of Shelby County and my great grandfather Charles Carter “C.C” Hooper served as Shelby County Constable in 1913,” stated Deputy Hooper. “Without my partner, Misty Ray, and the people that surround me, none of this would be possible. It is an honor to work for this department and I look forward to many years of service to this county.”

Prior to becoming an officer, he began his career in law enforcement in 2007 working as a correctional officer for the Angelina County Sheriff’s Office. He promoted through the ranks to become the jail warden and holds a master jailers license. He also worked as a correctional officer for the Nacogdoches County Sheriff’s Office for a period of time.

“In the period of time we have had Deputy Hooper with our office, he has shown tremendous leadership. He takes initiative and is always willing to step up and fill in wherever requested. He is an incredibly hard worker and he truly cares about this county,” stated Sheriff Windham. “Deputy Hooper is the kind of officer that any department would be very proud to have. Shelby County and our office is very fortunate to have him."

December 30, 2021 - Divine Ministries Outreach had a successful Christmas Project 2021 with 23 families adopted for Christmas plus to extra families helped. In all, 60 toy items were given to bless 60 children. Also, 20 gift shoe boxes for Women were given out along with 10 gifted shoe boxes for children.

In a Facebook post by Divine Ministries Outreach, Inc, the organization said, "This truly has been an amazing day. We thank God for who he is and how he has showed up and showed out again!!! Every person that was able to walk through the door today was blessed. We had to make three house deliveries and that was worth the travel. For all of you who have stood by our side and helped pave the way, we couldn't have done this without your prayers and support. Big Shout out to My Husband Eric Carpenter, my sons (Randal, Robert, and Terrance), Walmart, Shelby County Today Newspaper, Abundant Love Ministries, Open Door Worship, Jehovah Jireh Prophetess Lydia Johnson for your Prayers and support. Certainly a overflow shout out to my Apostle K.d.
