Tenaha High School on Thursday, December 26, 2024 –
Tenaha’s Annual Holiday Hoops Basketball Tournament has started boy’s and girl’s tournament action at four gyms throughout Shelby County and at Panola College. 16 girl’s and 16 boy’s teams will fight it out for several trophies during the 3-day event. The school has been holding the event since 2009.
Thursday morning saw Tenaha’s Lady Tigers team battle it out in opening round action against the Neches Lady Tigers. The game went back and forth early and was tied at 11-11 points midway through the first period. Neches went on a 12-3 run during the final four minutes of the first period and they took a 23-14 point advantage into the start of the second quarter. NHS outpaced Tenaha 20-15 in the second frame and they held a 43-29 lead at the midway break.
Tenaha fought back early in the third period and they cut the Neches lead to as few as five points but NHS led by ten points with a 55-45 lead going into the final period of play. Neches went on a 6-0 run at the beginning of the final quarter and then neither team scored for 5 ½ minutes. When the smoke cleared Neches had held THS scoreless through the final quarter and they took the 64-45 opening round win. Neches will play Rains High tomorrow at Panola Ponies Gymnasium in Carthage, Texas at 11 a.m. Tenaha will play Saltillo at 11 a.m. at Tiger Gymnasium in Tenaha.
Neches was led by Sealy Hines with 21 points and Joely Jenkins with 15. Tenaha was led scoring by Sug Cox with 21 points and Angel Alexander had 10.
