December 3, 2015 - The holiday season brings the promise of delicious eats, enduring family gatherings and bright lights illuminating the Deep East Texas nights. As the overwhelming feeling of both joy and thankfulness fills us all, it can be easy to forget the yearly spike of home robberies that closely follows. As you celebrate with your loved ones and embrace the holiday spirit, be sure to follow some simple but effective safety guidelines!
For those of us at home this holiday season, here are some easy tips to discourage potential buglers.
- Break down boxes and place them in garbage bags (so drive by window shoppers can't see what you have)
- Keep exterior of home well lit around doors and windows
- Place gifts were they are hidden from outside view (Christmas trees are beautiful shining through windows; just don't showcase your gifts for wondering eyes)
- Keep all shrubs and plants trimmed from entrance
- Do not leave descriptive voice mail messages
For those of us who find ourselves traveling during the holidays, here are some tips to ensure you don't end your holiday trip with a police call?
- Do not post holiday trip plans on social media sites
- Stop or forward mail
- Use light timers to give the appearance you are home
- Notify neighbors
- Let your local law enforcement know you are planning to vacation
Lastly, as a community, we can each take the time to look out for one another. Report suspicious behavior and don't be slow to call the authorities! As a member of this tightly knit county, I feel both proud and confident to say that this last per-caution isn't out of the norm for the majority.
Fare the well Shelby County! May your tables be full and your locks be unbroken. Merry Christmas and Happy (Safe) Holidays!
