September 15, 2026 - The Center Fire Department responded to a grass and woods fire on FM 2468 at the intersection of SL 500 at 2:20pm on Monday, September 15, 2026.
Several structures had also become involved in the fire and additional fire units were requested from Shelbyville Volunteer Fire Department.
The firefighters addressed multiple hot points on the property to extinguish the fires and prevent further spread.
Fire units then responded to another property just over two miles down the road from the original fire on what then transitioned to CR 3737 for a grass fire.
By 4:25pm, a crew from the Texas Forest Service was requested to respond to the original location.
Fire departments across Shelby County have been responding to other fires throughout the day.
The Texas Forest Service issued fire danger forecast information on September 14, 2026, which indicated Shelby County to be listed as “Moderate” on September 15; however the rating was projected to move to “High” for September 16-17.
According to data from the Texas Forest Service, observed danger also indicated on September 14, that a portion of Shelby County was shown to have a Fire Danger Rating of “Very High” while the rest of the county was listed as “High.”
The Keetch-Byram Drought Index (KBDI) also indicates on September 15, 2026, that Shelby County has a potential KBDI range of 500-800. The drought index ranges from 0 to 800, where a drought index of 0 represents no moisture depletion, and an index of 800 represents absolutely dry conditions.
