April 15, 2026 - Good Morning! It’s Wednesday, April 15. Spiritual Lessons From a Mother Hen, Chapter Two.
Recently I wrote about seeing my neighbor’s hen on a cold, early spring morning, as she wrapped her wings around her eleven baby chicks. It reminded me of Psalm 92:4 - “He will cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you will find refuge”. Well, yesterday I got yet another spiritual lesson from that mother chicken.
She and her chicks were looking for food around my front porch. She was teaching them, as always, and they were following her lead, spreading out in a hungry little search party, scratching their way along - when suddenly, out of nowhere, bounded my neighbor’s dog. The peaceful, placid scene quickly turned chaotic, as the chicks scurried frantically, finding refuge under a nearby bush.
But, to my surprise, the hen didn’t go with them. Instead, she headed in the opposite direction out into the open yard. Why would she leave her babies, I wondered, in their moment of greatest danger? The dog raced after her, its biggest, most obvious target. Well, I never realized how fast a chicken can move. That dog never had a chance. And he soon gave up, turning to mope his way back home.
When the coast was clear the mother hen slowly made her way to where her chicks were hiding. On seeing her, they came out, one by one, and immediately resumed their search for food - the peaceful, placid scene from before. I had witnessed quite a show. And, as I sat there on my porch swing, I wondered if the hen knew for certain that she could escape the dog’s clutches. Or was she, in fact, knowingly risking her life to protect the lives of her chicks.
In that moment, I was reminded of the truth found in John 15:13 - “Greater love hath no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.” A truth that each of us was reminded of, just two weeks ago . . . on Good Friday.
Meet you back here tomorrow,
