April 22, 2026 - Good Morning! It’s Wednesday, April 22. Do you know what special day today is? It’s a world-wide holiday that’s been celebrated for the last 56 years, since it began on April 22, 1970. Today is “Earth Day”.
Earth Day was, and is, intended to be a day of conversation about the environment, about how well we’re doing to nurture and care for the resources that God has blessed us with. Earth Day was partly inspired by a famous photograph taken on Christmas Eve, 1968 - a picture taken by an Apollo 8 astronaut who was circling the moon that night. After the crew had each read passages from the creation story in Genesis, William Anders aimed his camera through the window and snapped the shutter.
The photo wasn’t of the moon, but of the earth. It’s come to be known as “Earth Rise”, and is one of the most famous and most beautiful photographs in history. We saw, for the first time, our little blue planet suspended in the vast dark universe. The picture touched the imagination of millions of people. A couple of weeks ago another group of astronauts, aboard the Artemis II spacecraft, again orbited the moon. They took similar photos of earth and once again we were touched. Once again we were reminded of God’s great blessing of Creation and of our responsibility to care for that blessing.
“The Lord God took man and placed him in the Garden, to work it, and to keep it.” Genesis 2:15
Meet you back here tomorrow,
