April 4, 2025 - Good Morning! It’s Friday, April 4.
On April 4, 1975 - 50 years ago today - a young computer nerd started a new business in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Bill Gates was just 19 years old. He named his new venture Microsoft, and it grew like a California wildfire. Gates is now worth about 125 billion, and his little software company is valued at over one trillion dollars.
In 1986, Microsoft began to offer shares to the public on the stock market. That year I was a full time graduate student with a part-time job, and my finances were, how should I put it - limited. But, if my life had depended on it I probably could have scraped together a thousand dollars. If I had had the foresight to invest my “fortune” in Bill Gates’ company, do you know what that would come to today? Three and a half million dollars!
Well, I didn’t make that investment, but I did make some others. I’ve spent my life as a minister and a teacher, and I have often had the honor and privilege of investing my life into the lives of others - children, youth, adults, senior adults. Every once in a while, one of these “investments” will call or email or send a note, and hearing about their lives and their success and the difference they’ve made - well, it’s worth more than gold.
I still wish I’d invested in Microsoft, though!
Meet you back here on Monday,
David
