David’s Daily Devotion for Aug. 14

August 14, 2025 - Good Morning! It’s Thursday, August 14.

For much of the 20th century, the most popular media product was the vinyl record. At its peak in 1977, over 350 million were sold. But then, in 1982, a new product hit the market, the compact disc. And as the CD rose in popularity, the LP fell. By 1992 less than a million records were sold. Nothing surprising there - a new product takes the place of an old one - it’s the history of commerce.

But then, in 2006, something very surprising happened. Sales of records - which had been dormant for 15 years - began to increase. And they’ve increased every year since, until in 2024 they topped 44 million. Vinyl is back! And more highly prized than ever before. That’s good news for me - I’ve got over a thousand in my collection. Everything old is new again.

Ecclesiastes 1:9 voices a similar sentiment - “What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun”. Every new generation thinks that their experience is new. But students of history know that the author of Ecclesiastes was right, there is truly nothing new under the sun. Worldwide pandemic? It’s happened before. Financial crisis? Look it up. Humans behaving badly? Oh yeah.

Here’s another old saying - “The more things change, the more they remain the same”. And so we take hope and comfort today in the truth that the God we worship does not change. Psalm 100 reminds us that “the Lord is good and His love endures forever; His faithfulness continues through all generations”.

Meet you back here tomorrow,

David
