David’s Daily Devotion for Dec. 4

December 4, 2024 - Good Morning!  It’s Wednesday, December 4.

On December 4, 1858, one of the world’s greatest inventors was born in Farmington, Maine.  His name was Chester Greenwood and, at the young age of fifteen, he invented . . . ear muffs.  Winters up in Maine get really, really cold, and unprotected ears had been needlessly suffering for centuries.  But, for every great problem, there is a great mind, a mind that somehow was able to envision two pieces of cloth connected by a wire.  A miracle of modern ingenuity.

I’ve never actually worn ear muffs.  There wasn’t much call for them, growing up in Houston.  But I’m sure they’re very nice.  But does Chester’s creation qualify as an invention?  When I think of great inventors I think of geniuses like Eli Whitney, Samuel Morse, Alexander Graham Bell, Nikolai Tesla, Thomas Edison.  I don’t think of Chester Greenwood.

But, hey, young Chester saw a need, did his best, and fixed a problem.  A good day’s work.  A nice effort.  An example to us all.  And let’s be honest, most of us are a lot more like Chester Greenwood than Thomas Edison.  Our goals are most often pretty modest, but we do our best, and we try to fix the problem.  No one will ever call us a genius, but we hang in there, we keep on keeping on, we persevere.  And sometimes that can feel like a little miracle.

Galatians 6:9 - “Let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up”

Meet you back here tomorrow,

P.S. - Robert Adler was born on this day in 1913.  He created the TV remote control.  Now that’s a great invention!
