June 3, 2026 - Good Morning! It’s Wednesday, June 3.
In yesterday’s devotion I reminisced about growing up with - and loving - Vacation Bible School. I recalled how those special summer weeks featured not only fun songs and fun games, not only yummy snacks and creative crafts - I still have the paper towel holder I made 60 years ago! - but also included scripture memorization. A great experience for kids. A great practice for adults too.
The famed evangelist Charles Spurgeon said, “The Bible in the memory is better than the Bible in the bookshelf.” Rick Warren, author of the bestseller “The Purpose Driven Life”, put it like this - “If you want to be spiritually strong, the greatest habit you can develop is memorizing scripture”. I hope that Bible memorization is already a part of your spiritual journey. If it’s not, then here’s some helpful tips to get you started.
Read. Write. Recite. Repeat.
Read - Pick a verse that you’re already familiar with. Choose a scripture that really speaks to you. Then read it and reread it, and reread it again.
Write - Take a pen and commit your verse to paper. The action of writing uses a different part of your brain and adds to retention. Put your verses in a small notebook, one that can fit in a pocket or purse, and carry it with you.
Recite - Engage your voice and your ears, as well as your brain. Don’t worry that someone will overhear - they’ll receive a blessing.
Repeat - Memory teachers recommend the 5x5 method. Repeat your verse 5 times a day for 5 weeks. After that you’ll know it like “the back of your hand”.
Practice makes perfect. No time like the present. Good luck and God bless!
Meet you back here tomorrow,
David
