March 28, 2025 - Good Morning! It’s Friday, March 28.
As we come to the end of the first full week of spring, I’m reminded of my favorite sign of the season - the arrival of the hummingbirds. We see them here in East Texas from March to October - the warm months - and early this week I saw the first ones at my feeder. The sighting was telegraphed by their telltale sound, something like the sound of a weed eater. I was resting on my front porch - after a grueling day of resting on my front porch - when a pair of little green goblins appeared. I was amazed, as always, with how they can hover in midair, their tiny wings beating so fast that they seem to disappear.
I’m an ardent birdwatcher - as long as they appear within eyesight of my porch. From that comfortable vantage point I can see redbirds and woodpeckers, blue jays and hawks, vultures and owls, the occasional eagle. As I watched the pair of hummingbirds fight over the feeder, I was reminded of how aggressive these little creatures are. There was enough sugar water for a flock of hummingbirds (actually the collective noun is “bouquet “), but they thrust and parried as if there was only one drop left. I guess they need that fighting spirit to survive.
Beautiful, amazing creatures in God’s beautiful, amazing world. Thank you, Father, for your creation.
Meet you back here on Monday,
David
