David’s Daily Devotion for Nov. 1

November 1, 2024 - Good Morning! It’s Friday, November 1.

Something happened at my house yesterday that hadn’t happened in a long time. It rained. We’ve been going through quite a dry spell here in Shelby County, and we needed that rain. I needed that rain. As I sat on my porch and watched the long, slow, soaking shower - listened to it, smelled it, enjoyed it - I realized how much I’d missed it. As they say, “Absence makes the heart grow fonder”.

There are lots of moments like that. The moment in spring when color suddenly bursts back into the world. The day in summer when you take that first sweet bite of ice-cold watermelon. The chilly morning in winter when a steaming mug of hot chocolate warms your soul. And then there’s that moment when you open a letter from a long lost friend, or get an unexpected phone call from someone you once loved. A blessing.

Sometimes we go through dry spells on our spiritual journey, times when His letter sits unopened on the shelf, and His voice grows faint. And then we open that letter and begin, once again, to read. Maybe we choose a favorite passage - Psalm 23, I Corinthians 13 - and suddenly we realize just how much we’ve missed it. And we’re refreshed.  We’re comforted. We’re blessed.

“As the deer pants for the water brook, so my soul pants for You, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.” (Psalm 42:1).

Meet you back here on Monday,

David
