David’s Daily Devotion for Sept. 6

September 6, 2024 - Good Morning! It's Friday, September 6.

Do you enjoy antique stores? Second to bookstores, they're my favorite place to spend time on a leisurely Saturday afternoon. Over the last few years, however, I've had a few disconcerting moments in antique stores. While walking through the cluttered aisles, I'll notice something, usually a toy or a game, from my own childhood - maybe an Etch-A-Sketch or a View Master or a Magic Eight Ball. And it is in moments like these, that I am struck by the sobering truth that I, too, am an antique!

But then there are those items, from my parents' and grandparents' generation that look familiar to me, but that I can't quite recall the name for, or the purpose of. You'll see a photo on Facebook sometimes, followed by the question - "Do you know what this is?". It's usually followed by a lot of wrong answers, and, finally, by a right one. The names of things often have a way of fading into history, and so do their purpose.

When we lose sight of our life's purpose, we lose the opportunity to be happy and content and useful.  Pastor Rick Warren wrote the book "The Purpose Driven Life" in 2002 and it has gone on to sell a staggering 50 million copies. Just an example of how important the subject of purpose is to us human beings. God has somethings to say about it, of course. Here are a few "steppingstone" scriptures for your spiritual journey.

Many are the plans in a person's heart, but it is the Lord's purpose that prevails. Proverbs 19:21

We know that for those who love God, all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose. Romans 8:28

For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:10

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11

Meet you back here on Monday,
