October 23, 2024 - Good Morning! It's Wednesday, October 23.
On this day in 1956, a new visual medium was unveiled - not film, but tape - video tape. It wasn't until the 1980's that this new technology was made available to the public. I remember buying my first video player/recorder about that time. They were huge, the size of a suitcase, and pretty pricey, too. Back then, in my younger days, I prided myself in being on the forefront of new technology. Now, in my old age, I collect antiques. Go figure!
When my family gets together, we like to play board games, and one of our favorites is called "Chronology." You pick a card with an historical event on it and try to guess what year it occurred, or at least place it on a timeline. Sounds kind of nerdy, I know, but it's actually a lot of fun. And, as you play, you quickly learn something about dating inventions. You start by remembering when the public started using it, and then subtract twenty years or so, for your guess.
The point is there's usually a substantial gap between an invention and its unveiling to the world. Just imagine, then, what is being created in 2024 - particularly in the area of robotics and artificial intelligence. And 20 years from now these futuristic devices will be commonplace reality. This is a cycle repeated over and over in the timeline of human history, the constant searching and striving for something different, something revolutionary, something new.
We are certainly in that kind of culture, that kind of cycle right now. And perhaps in times like these, as we look to the future, we should also take time to look to the past.
"Your Word, O Lord, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens." (Psalm 119:89). "The grass withers and the flowers fade, but the Word of our God endures forever." (Isaiah 40:8). "Heaven and earth will pass away, but my Word will never pass away." (Matthew 24:35).
Meet you back here tomorrow,
David
