David's Daily Devotion for August 22

August 22, 2024 - Good Morning! It's Thursday, August 22.

My youngest granddaughter had a big day this week, a big milestone in her young life - she took her first steps! She's 16 months old, a little past the point when most kids start walking, and we were starting to wonder. My theory is that she's been able to walk for some time now, she just chose not to. And the reason she made that choice is that she is a champion crawler. The girl can really scoot! So, why risk being on two feet when you're so good at being on all fours.

Her mom said that, even though she's walking now, she'll still drop down and crawl when she really needs to get somewhere fast. I got this silly image in my mind of her continuing that choice into childhood, into her teenage years. An image of her as a mature woman with a family and a career, suddenly deciding to crawl around the house!

When you think about it, maturity is just a choice. Knowing how to do something, and actually doing it, are two very different things. We see this in our Christian journeys, as well. Here's some words from the Word.

  • When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I thought as a child, I reasoned as a child. But when I became a man, I put away childish things. I Corinthians 13:11
  • You need milk, not solid food, for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child. But solid food is for the mature, for those who have the power of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil. Hebrews 5:13-14
  • Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. 2 Peter 3:15

Meet you back here tomorrow,
