David's Daily Devotion for August 6

August 6, 2025 - Good Morning! It’s Wednesday, August 6.

Welcome to Day 3 of Teacher Week at the Daily Devotion! As school bells are beginning to ring across East Texas, and across the country, we’re focusing on some men and women of the Bible who were gifted and influential teachers.

Priscilla was an influential part of the First Century Church. She and her husband Aquila were driven out of Rome by persecution. They ended up in Corinth and met the Apostle Paul there. They shared the profession of tent making with Paul, as well as a passion for spreading the good news of Jesus Christ. The couple became his trusted co-workers and helped him build the Corinthian congregation.

When Paul left Corinth to travel to Ephesus, Priscilla and Aquila followed him. There they met another important figure in early Christianity, the evangelist, Apollos. An impressive orator, with a zeal for sharing the gospel that rivaled Paul’s, Apollos lacked only one thing - a complete knowledge of Jesus. Luke tells us in the Book of Acts that “when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and explained to him the way of God more adequately”.

It is to Apollos’ credit that he received this teaching with grace. Human beings often resist instruction because of pride or ego. But when we stop learning, we stop growing. Apollos already had success, had a reputation, had a following, and could have easily dismissed the help from the couple - especially the teaching of Priscilla, a woman living in a man’s world. But he listened, he learned, and he grew. And in I Corinthians Paul paid him a tremendous compliment when he said, “I planted, Apollos watered, and God gave the growth”.

The teaching of Priscilla made a difference to Apollos, to the Early Church, to the cause of Christ.

Meet you back here tomorrow,
David
