July 22, 2025 - Good Morning! It’s Tuesday, July 22.
English is a complicated language. Many English words have multiple meanings. The word “set,” for instance, is said to have 430 definitions! Today we take a look at a complicated Bible word - “blessing.” Here’s just a few of the ways that we use it.
- A prayer before meals - “Dad, would you say the blessing?”
- To make the sign of the cross - “The player blessed himself before his at-bat.”
- To consecrate - “The pastor prayed a blessing over the newborn baby.”
- Response to a sneeze - “God bless you!”
- As a lead-in to gossip - “Bless her heart, she needs to go on a diet.”
- As praise - “Bless the Lord, O my soul.”
Perhaps the most famous blessing is found in Numbers 6:24-26. I offer it to you and yours this morning.
“The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make His face shine upon you, and be gracious; the Lord turn His face toward you and give you peace.”
Meet you back here tomorrow,
David
