June 13, 2025 - Good Morning! And Happy Friday the 13th!
Any given year can have up to three Friday the 13th’s - or as few as one. The people who suffer from paraskevidekatriaphobia will be glad to hear that 2025 has just one. Paraskevidekatriaphobia is the fear of this dreaded day, and it’s also a word you don’t want to get in a spelling bee. This particular superstition ranks right up there with walking under a ladder, breaking a mirror, or crossing paths with a black cat.
Why does this day get such a bad rap? Well, there’s many more than 13 possible reasons. Some connect it to the 13th card in the fortune telling Tarot deck, the “death” card. Some point back to the Friday the 13th in 1307, during The Crusades, when the Knights Templar were arrested and executed. Many others count the people at the Last Supper - 13 - and then add the day of the crucifixion - Friday. Over time, the reasons for our superstitions get a bit murky. But, for many people, the fear is still there, and can be powerful.
Let’s end this “dark” devotion with a hopeful note about a truly powerful day. Any month that contains a Friday the 13th... begins on a Sunday. The Lord’s Day!
Meet you back here on Monday,
David
