November 20, 2025 - Good Morning! It’s Thursday, November 20.
Thanksgiving Day is just one week away. A day for food, family, and football. Nothing wrong with that! But could it be more? Could it also be an annual reminder of the importance of thankfulness in our lives? Could it be an annual reset of our spirit of gratefulness? With that in mind, we’re in the middle of a two-week thanksgiving series. Next week we’ll take a look at some Bible characters who were thankful, but this morning we remember the story behind another thanksgiving song.
As a boy, “Thank You Lord For Saving My Soul” was one of my favorite gospel choruses. Surprisingly, it’s not an American song. It was published in 1940 in Glasgow, Scotland. Seth Sykes was a 37 year-old train conductor when he and his wife, Bessie, surrendered to the ministry as evangelists. During the 1920’s and 1930’s, they and their children travelled all around Britain, presenting the gospel message in story and song. Seth would show “lantern slides” (Google it!) to illustrate his sermons, and Bessie would bring her fold-up organ to accompany the singing.
The Sykes wrote hundreds of Christian songs during those years, but this is the only one that lives on. Sing it again this morning - and be thankful.
Thank You, Lord, for saving my soul
Thank You, Lord, for making me whole
Thank You, Lord, for giving to me
Thy great salvation so rich and free
Meet you back here tomorrow,
David
