David's Daily Devotion for October 14

October 14, 2022 - Good Morning! It’s Friday, October 14.

This Sunday we’ll be singing an old, old chorus at First Baptist Center. A song that our church family loves to sing - “This Little Light of Mine.” We sing it in the Black Gospel style - slow and soulful. Here’s the story behind that song.

I grew up thinking that “This Little Light” was written for children, with a set of hand motions to match. But it’s actually a spiritual, and like most songs from that style, has an unknown origin and an anonymous composer. It began to appear in songbooks in the 1920's and the first audio recording was made in 1934 in a very unusual place. It featured an inmate at the prison in Huntsville, Texas.

During the 1950's and 1960's, "This Little Light of Mine" became a protest song in the civil rights movement. The Boys Choir of Harlem sang it on The David Letterman Show the night after 911. And in 2018, when Prince Harry married Meghan Markle at Windsor Castle, this little song closed the ceremony.

Matthew 5:16 - Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.

Meet you back here on Monday,
Bro. David
