David's Daily Devotion for October 15

October 15, 2024 - Good Morning! It's Tuesday, October 15.

Growing up, I read a lot of science fiction - Jules Verne, H. G. Wells, Ray Bradbury. I was fascinated by the concept of time travel, of traveling to the past, or the future, in a time machine. Maybe, in our lifetime, we'll see that fiction become fact. We've witnessed enough technological miracles in the last 50 years to make us believe that anything is possible.

If I had a time machine I wouldn't travel to the future - way too scary. But to be able to visit the past, well, that would be a trip. To go back to a North Carolina beach on December 17, 1903, and watch a man named Orville fly. To visit Philadelphia in the summer of 1776 and witness a man named John boldly sign his name. To journey to an island on a morning in 1492 and see a man named Christopher step into a new world.

Maybe you wouldn't go back to meet a moment in history, but to meet a person of history. Lincoln? Shakespeare? Aristotle? Who would it be? And what would you say to them? Or maybe you'd take a more personal journey to the past and visit a loved one who has gone on to glory. I'd give anything to have an hour to sit and talk with my mom.

The person who is usually at the top of the list when you google "Most Famous Figure in History" is Christ. If you could go back to 1st Century Palestine, what would you say to Jesus? The famous contemporary Christian song, "I Can Only Imagine", has the line - When I stand in Your presence, will I be able to speak at all? Maybe that's the secret. If we had the chance to sit at the feet of the Master, we wouldn't waste time talking, we would simply listen.

Why not open your spiritual time machine this morning and spend some time in His Word.

Meet you back here tomorrow,
David
