October 16, 2026 - Good Morning! It’s Friday, October 16.
Do you recognize the name Jessica McClure? Maybe you know her better by her nickname. On October 16, 1987, an 18-month-old child was pulled from a well in Midland, Texas. “Baby Jessica” had fallen into that well almost 60 hours before. She fell 22 feet down through an 8-inch wide pipe. The rescue team had to create a parallel shaft and then cut through solid rock to reach her. During this long ordeal they knew that Jessica was still alive because they could hear her singing! And the entire country was riveted. An amazing story.
All three TV networks broke into regular programming to broadcast the rescue. Remember when there were only three networks? President Reagan sent his blessings. The photo of Jessica being pulled to safety won the Pulitzer Prize. And ABC turned it all into a Movie of the Week. Remember when there were Movies of the Week? Baby Jessica is 40 now, a grandmother, and still lives in Midland. She has no memory of those cataclysmic days.
But millions still remember her story. They remember a moment in time when an entire nation stopped what it was doing and focused on... a baby. Two thousand years ago, Saint Luke told another story, about another child. We’ve heard these words perhaps hundreds of times, but they never lose their power, never fail to inspire. An amazing story.
“For unto us a child is born, unto us a Son is given, and the government shall be upon His shoulder, and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, the mighty God, the everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace.”
Meet you back here on Monday,
David
