October 3, 2025 - Good Morning! It’s Friday, October 3.
Trinity Church, in lower Manhattan, was built in 1846. And for the next 25 years, it was the tallest building in America. In 1973, it was dwarfed by two new buildings, erected nearby. The twin towers of the World Trade Center had become America’s tallest skyscrapers. On the morning of September 11, 2001, the church sat, literally, in the shadow of those towers. And after they came down, and after the dust had settled, New Yorkers were amazed to see Trinity Church still standing. It was, literally, a miracle.
In the days, weeks, and months following 911, Trinity Church became an oasis of care and encouragement and love for the citizens of New York. It became a place of connection. It became a house of prayer. But though its walls were left standing, a very important part of the church - its grand and glorious century-old pipe organ - was damaged beyond repair. And for the last 24 years its voice has been silenced - until now.
The new organ has 8,014 pipes. The biggest one is 32 feet long. Imagine the sound that comes out of that pipe. Since 911, Trinity Church has gotten by with an electronic instrument, but there’s no comparison between a pipe organ and a synthesized keyboard. It’s like substituting cheap margarine for sweet, fresh, creamy butter. A pipe organ is like having your own symphony orchestra - at the touch of a key. Mozart called it “the King of Instruments”. Bach called it “the Voice of God”.
Trinity Church, for centuries, has been a lighthouse in the city. And when that city was devastated by an unimaginable act of terror, it became a beacon of hope. Now, once again, it is filled with music.
Meet you back here on Monday,
David
