Dragons Earn 62-7 Bi-District Football Win over Cougars

The Shelbyville Dragons varsity football team earned a 62-7 point Bi-District playoff win over the Jewett-Leon Cougars on Thursday at Nacogdoches High School. The Dragons came into the contest as the champs of District 11 2A-1 and had an 8-2 win-loss record this season. The Cougars came in at 6-4 and were the fourth seed of District 12 2A-1.

The Dragons scored first when Hunter Harvey scored on a 21-yard touchdown run with 10:18 remaining in the first quarter. Edwin Vasquez kicked the extra point to give the Dragons a 7-0 point advantage.

Jewett answered with a score of their own when Cotton Brigner broke free for a 52-yard touchdown run with 7:42 left in the first frame. An extra point kick by Wyatt Moore tied the game at 7-7.

On the Dragons next drive quarterback DJ Barnes broke loose for an 11-yard touchdown run which helped give SHS a 14-7 lead with 5:09 left in the first period. Jewett fumbled on their next possession and the Dragons got a 1-yard touchdown run from Ronnie Williams with 1:38 left in the opening stanza. Another extra point kick from Vasquez extended the Dragons lead to 21-7.

Williams scored another touchdown at the 7:47 mark of the second quarter and Shelbyville extended their lead to 28-7. With 1:45 left in the second quarter DJ Barnes hit Tanor Doggett for a 35-yard touchdown reception. The extra point try was blocked but SHS took a 34-7 lead into the midway intermission.

Barnes added a 2-yard touchdown run to his resume in the second half and another Vasquez extra point kick gave SHS a 41-7 lead with 8:38 left in the third quarter. Hunter Harvey soon after picked off a Cougar’s pass and returned it across midfield to the Jewett 14-yardline. Soon after he scored on a 1-yard touchdown run which gave the Dragons a 48-7 lead with 4:21 remaining in the third frame.

Shelbyville got a 7-yard touchdown run from Williams and a 2-point conversion run from Doggett with 9:22 left in the final period. This gave the Dragons a 56-7 lead.

The final score of the contest came at the final buzzer when freshman Tate Obregon plowed into the endzone from the 2-yardline for a touchdown. The final score stood at Shelbyville 62 Jewett-Leon 7.
