February 12, 2025 – The National Forests and Grasslands in Texas (NFGT) will begin prescribed burn operations this winter and spring across its forests and grasslands. These controlled burns are a critical part of the forest service’s commitment to maintaining forest health, reducing wildfire risk, and promoting ecosystem restoration.
Key benefits include:
- Reducing Wildfire Risk: Removing excess vegetation minimizes the likelihood of large, unmanageable wildfires.
- Restoring Ecosystems: Fire is a natural process that promotes native plant growth, enhances wildlife habitats, and increases biodiversity.
- Improving Forest Health: Controlled burns reduce invasive species, pests, and diseases while supporting healthier, more resilient forests.
Commitment to Safety
The safety of the public and personnel is our top priority. All prescribed burns are conducted under specific weather conditions, with close monitoring by qualified fire management teams. Prescribed burns are carefully planned and executed by trained personnel to achieve specific ecological and safety objectives
During burn operations, smoke columns may be visible, and temporary closures of certain forest areas may be necessary. Signs, which may include electronic road signs, will be posted in affected areas to ensure public awareness. Drivers encountering smoke are encouraged to reduce speed and use lowbeam headlights for safety.
Staying Informed
To keep the public informed, NFGT will provide regular updates on burn locations and schedules through:
- Website: Visit www.fs.usda.gov/texas for planned burn areas and maps.
- Social media: Follow us on Facebook, https://www.facebook.com/NFsandGrasslandsinTexas for real-time updates.
- Public Notice Boards: Check bulletin boards at trailheads and recreation areas for the latest information.
“We appreciate the public’s cooperation and understanding as we conduct these essential forest management activities,” said Jamie Sowell, Fire Management Officer for the NFGT. “Prescribed burns are vital for creating resilient landscapes, reducing wildfire risks, and supporting local ecosystems.”
Protecting Communities and Wildlife
Controlled burns not only protect nearby communities and infrastructure but also benefit wildlife habitats. By reducing dense underbrush, prescribed fires create an environment for tender vegetation that provides forage for species such as deer, turkeys, and quail.
Health and Safety Tips
Residents with respiratory or health concerns are advised to:
- Close windows and use air conditioning or heating systems to filter indoor air.
- Consider leaving the area during burn operations.
