January 24, 2026 – As hazardous conditions continue to impact the state, the Texas Department of
Transportation is encouraging drivers to avoid traveling unless absolutely necessary until the weather improves.
This week, TxDOT crews in the Lufkin District and statewide began pretreating roads to help prevent the accumulation of ice on roadways.
Prevention operations are ongoing, and crews are prepared to clear roads of ice, snow or other debris expected to impact road safety during this storm.
Keeping highways open is critical to ensure the safe travel of emergency responders, utility workers, freight carriers and neighbors who may need to respond to emergencies in this region or other parts of the state.
Residents are encouraged not to travel unless necessary to prevent vehicle crashes and travel hazards.
If travel is necessary, be extremely cautious.
• Slow down.
• Give emergency responders, road workers, and stopped vehicles extra room for safety.
• Allow extra time to reach your destination.
• Leave extra space between your vehicle and others.
• Turn on headlights when traveling. Daytime running lights do not provide enough visibility in poor conditions.
• Treat signalized intersections as four-way stops if power is interrupted.
By staying home unless necessary, residents can help prevent creating more hazards than what the storm system brings.
Remember to Drive Like a Texan: Kind. Courteous. Safe.
