January 6, 2023 - U.S. Highway 96 North just south of SL 500 was the scene of a two-vehicle crash Monday, January 2, 2023.
Emergency personnel responded to the scene to assist those involved. According to Texas Department of Public Safety State Trooper David Shields, Jr., at 1:37pm a white 2002 GMC pickup truck towing a trailer and driven by Jason Wagner, 43, was pulling out of a private driveway onto U.S. Highway 96 attempting to turn left to travel southbound.
At that time, a black 2018 Dodge Ram driven by Maria Tovar, 55, was northbound when the GMC failed to yield right of way causing the Dodge to strike the trailer being hauled by the GMC. The Dodge came to rest in the outside lane, and the GMC pulled off into another private driveway out of the highway.
A 4-year-old female passenger of the GMC was transported by family in a private vehicle to Nacogdoches Medical Center - Shelby Emergency Department for treatment of possible minor injuries.
Tovar was also traveling with a 14-year-old female and 8-year-old male who were not reported to have been injured. No other injuries were reported as a result of the incident and no citations were issued at the time of the crash investigation at the scene.
Center Fire Department and Shelby County Sheriff's Department personnel were on scene to assist.
