My Five Cents: 87th Legislative Session, Corporate Destinations, Vaccines, Revenue Estimate

January 14, 2021 - The Legislature has ended its first week of session. Due to the ongoing pandemic, the Senate has decided to recess until January 26th. However, we will still be working hard in the meantime on legislation for Senate District 3.

January 7, 2021 - With the beginning of the 87th legislative session fast approaching, my staff and I are gearing up to do the work of the people at your Texas Capitol. Though this session will certainly look different than past sessions, we are prepared to do this important work on behalf of Senate District 3.

November 2, 2020 - One hundred and thirty-six years ago this month, the Texas State Fair opened in Dallas. The iconic predecessor to our present-day State Fair of Texas drew crowds from across the state. A rival fair, the Dallas exposition, opened around the same time and together they welcomed over 35,000 people. Both fairs were successful and, ultimately, decided to combine efforts in 1887 to establish the State Fair of Texas as we know it today.

September 24, 2020 - This month Texans celebrate National Hunting and Fishing Day on September 26. Hunters and anglers alike are encouraged to enjoy the outdoors and continue Texas’ long tradition of hunting and fishing. This day was designated by Congress in 1971 to honor hunters and anglers for their commitment to conservation. Every year, this day is celebrated on the fourth Saturday in September. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is encouraging outdoorsmen to invite others along for their outdoor adventures.

My Five Cents: August Marks 100-year Anniversary of 19th Amendment

August 28, 2020 - This August marked the 100-year anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote. On August 18, 1920, Tennessee was the 36th state to ratify the 19th amendment, which secured the adoption of the amendment. We celebrate this important centennial of women’s suffrage.

July 30, 2020 - The history of East Texas is rich with stories of Texans fighting for our states independence. In July of 1832, an order was given requiring Texans to surrender their weapons to the Mexican army. In response, a band of settlers in Nacogdoches attacked the town's Mexican garrison. To some historians, the Battle of Nacogdoches not only freed East Texas from Mexican military rule, but also served as the starting point of the Texas Revolution and led to the independence of our great state.

Nichols Cautions Local Governments Against Raising Property Taxes

July 28, 2020 - As a former mayor and city councilman, I understand firsthand the challenges that are presented when balancing a budget - in good times and bad. Currently, as a Senator and a member of the Senate Finance Committee, I have the honor of working to ensure the state is responsibly allocating the taxpayers money, and being a good steward of its resources.

My Five Cents: Operation Connectivity, Work-Search Requirements, DPS, Operation Safe Open, Nursing Homes

June 25, 2020 - This upcoming month we will celebrate two important holidays. The first being the Fourth of July to commemorate the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. The second is National Pecan Pie Day on July 12. Pecan pie also happens to be the State Pie of Texas. So while you shoot off fireworks and eat pie, I hope it is with those close to you, as I know mine will be.

Senator Nichols Statement Contact Tracing

June 1, 2020 - The State of Texas has recently entered into an agreement with a company to participate in contact tracing. This includes contacting an individual who has tested positive for COVID-19, and documenting their location and who they have been in contact with to trace where the disease may have been spread. Participation in this is 100% voluntary, and no Texan will be required to participate in this process. If you receive a phone call from a contact tracer, you have every right to not engage with them or provide the information they request.
