Critical Fire Weather Conditions Present Over Texas Plains

February 22, 2017 Amarillo, Texas — Critical fire weather conditions will be present over the Texas Plains region Thursday and Friday.

The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center has issued an alert putting western portions of the state in the “extreme”, “critical” and “elevated” categories for wildfire potential.

The areas of concern are Amarillo, Lubbock, Midland/Odessa, Abilene, Fort Stockton, Wichita Falls, San Angelo and El Paso regions.

Central Texas Now Has Airtanker Base to Help Fight Wildfires

February 17, 2017 AUSTIN, Texas — Texas A&M University System Chancellor John Sharp joined State Rep. John Cyrier and officials with the Texas A&M Forest Service on Thursday to unveil the newly established Austin Airtanker Base at the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.

The base is the first, state-funded portable airtanker base in Central Texas and is able to accommodate even the largest of aircraft used to drop fire retardant during wildfires. While it is based in Austin, it is portable in order to move to other parts of the state as needed.

Texans Celebrate Arbor Day in ‘The Oldest Town in Texas”

November 4, 2016 - Texans from across the state gathered today in the Oldest Town in Texas to celebrate the State Arbor Day and how trees can connect the past, present and future.

Today’s celebration, themed Leaving a Legacy, is a nod to the City of Nacogdoches celebrating its Tri-centennial this year. The town is believed to be 300 years old — far older than the state of Texas itself. As are some of the area trees, that serve as living witness to local history.

Texas A&M Forest Service Celebrates Successful Year

November 3, 2016 - Over 500 Texas A&M Forest Service employees came together at the agency’s annual personnel meeting Wednesday, Nov. 2.

Texas A&M Forest Service employees gathered to celebrate their dedication to the citizens and natural resources of Texas. The meeting, held at the I.O.O.F. Event Center in Corsicana, Texas, serves as an opportunity to refocus the agency’s goals, as well as recognize long standing employees and acknowledge recipients of this year’s director’s awards.

Wildfire Training Academy to be Held in Bastrop

October 7, 2016 - Firefighters from across the country will travel to Camp Swift to attend one of the country’s premiere interagency wildfire academies.

The 19th annual Capital Area Interagency Wildfire and Incident Management Academy, fondly known as the Bastrop Academy, will take place Oct.13-26 at the Camp Swift National Guard Facility in Bastrop, Texas. This year, more than 400 students from 12 states are expected to attend.
