While Texas DPS State Trooper Dustin Ramos investigated the crash, Center firemen provided traffic control and Deputy Chris Benton searched for the missing parties involved in the crash.

It appeared at the scene a white Dodge Ram 2500 4X4 and a yellow Jeep Wrangler collided head-on sometime before 6am. The driver of the Jeep and another passenger exited the vehicle, and fled the scene, abandoning a third passenger and a dog in the Jeep.

Those involved remaining at the scene refused treatment from ACE EMS. Authorities continue the search for the other two individuals involved in the wreck.

Anyone who knows the whereabouts of those involved should contact authorities as soon as possible.

July 1, 2016 - Newly Appointed Constable Precinct 5 Robert Hairgrove was sworn into office on Friday, July 1, 2016 at the Shelby County Courthouse.

Constable Hairgrove was sworn in by Shelby County Judge Allison Harbison in the courtroom on the third floor of the courthouse.

Hairgrove won the election this year for Constable Precinct 5 and was scheduled to take office on January 1, 2017. Following the passing of Stanley Burgay, who held the position of Precinct 5 Constable for 12 years, it was necessary to appoint someone to the position.

The absence of Burgay has been noticeable and has left a great need for someone to take on his position and fulfill his duties. The Shelby County Commissioners' Court recently approved Hairgrove's appointment.

June 30, 2016 - The Timpson Volunteer Fire Department responded to a two-vehicle crash on FM 1971 just over the Rusk County line at 5:57pm on Thursday, June 30, 2016.

When the firemen arrived at the scene of the crash at CR 3251 just under 2 miles from U.S. Highway 84 one vehicle remained partially in the roadway and traffic control was necessary.

A trailer loaded with a boat which was being towed by a Jeep was removed from the trailer hitch of the Jeep and attached to another vehicle to help clear the roadway.

It appeared an RV being hauled by a grey Dodge pickup truck traveling south lost a wheel which came into the path of white Jeep Wrangler traveling north. The driver of the Jeep was able to prevent the vehicle from rolling and brought it to a stop on the southbound side of the roadway in a ditch.

Once the scene was clear, the Timpson Volunteer firemen returned to the station in Timpson.

(Update): According to Texas Department of Public Safety State Trooper Erik Ramirez, at 5:48pm a silver 2014 Dodge Ram 2500 driven by Kevin Scott Bryce, 35, of Timpson was traveling south on FM 1971 pulling a 5th wheel Montana motorhome.

As the truck and motorhome passed a white 2016 Jeep Wrangler driven by Phillip Alston  Russell, 30, of Austin with passenger Treasi Marino, 36, which was traveling north hauling a boat. When the vehicles passed, a left side tire came off of the motorhome and struck the Jeep.

June 29, 2016 — COLLEGE STATION, Texas — As Texans from around the state make plans of picnics with family and friends, parades through town squares and fireworks displays after dark, Texas A&M Forest Service urges caution with outdoor activities such as grilling, campfires and fireworks.

“According to the National Fire Protection Association, July 4th has the most fires reported than on any other day and fireworks account for two out of five of those fires — more than any other cause of fire,” TFS Mitigation and Prevention Department Head Bruce Woods said.

Due to the recent rains in May and June the potential for wildfire has decreased across much of the state. However, Texas A&M Forest Service encourages everyone to use caution and stay safe this Independence Day.

“Though the rains have helped decrease wildfire potential, it has produced a lot of tall grass across the state this summer. It’s best to play it safe and avoid these areas for your fireworks fun; especially when using aerials,” Tom Spencer, TFS predictive services department head said.

Fireworks safety tips:
- Before you celebrate, always check with local government officials to ensure fireworks and outdoor burning are allowed in your county. Be sure to comply with all restrictions.
- Read and follow all warnings and instruction labels on fireworks.
- Use fireworks only under close adult supervision and in safe areas away from structures, dry grass and brush.
- Keep a hose, bucket of water and wet towels nearby in case of a malfunction or fire.
- Dispose of used fireworks in a bucket of water.
- Never ignite fireworks in a container, especially a glass or metal container.

Note: Burn bans and fireworks restrictions are determined by county government. Texas A&M Forest Service does not take a position on the use of fireworks, nor does the agency determine, set or lift restrictions.

June 24, 2016 - A Shelby County resident reported receiving a call from the IRS on Thursday, June 23rd with instructions to call (401) 710-1856 to pay taxes or they would be penalized or sued. Always use caution when receiving phone calls where the caller is threatening and demanding payment of money owed.

According to a consumer alert on irs.gov - Note that the IRS will never: 1) call to demand immediate payment, nor will the agency call about taxes owed without first having mailed you a bill; 2) demand that you pay taxes without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe; 3) require you to use a specific payment method for your taxes, such as a prepaid debit card; 4) ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone; or 5) threaten to bring in local police or other law-enforcement groups to have you arrested for not paying.

Sheriff Willis Blackwell would like the citizens of Shelby County to be aware of several scams going around including an IRS scam.

The people are calling stating that you owe the IRS some money and wanting you to send it to them by credit card or bank card and saying if you don't, you will be arrested.

The IRS does not operate this way at all. Do not send them anything. These people are very persistent. If they call; just hang up.
