News
September 11, 2015 - This is the first week of the library’s new hours. We are hoping that being open from 10 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday will better accommodate our library users’ needs. In the past we were open at 9 a.m. on Saturdays and very few came into the library until 11, an hour before closing. The library would be full of users at noon with us having to announce that we were closing. Hopefully, we will also better accommodate our older children who get to “sleep in” on Saturday mornings. The library will also be closing an hour earlier at 5 p.m. on Friday. Regular hours of 10-6 will remain for Tuesday through Thursday.
The library received news from the Tocker Foundation of Austin that we had received a $5,000 grant for books. This is wonderful news and much needed funds to keep our collection current. Most of the funds will be spent on books for the 8-12 year olds who are the fastest growing group of new library card holders. Other goods news is that the Friends of the Library will be meeting at the library on Wednesday, Sept. 16th at 10:00 a.m. to organize the October books sale and Poultry Festival quilt raffle. This books sale promises to be even bigger than the last with an excellent selection of “like new” materials for the bargain price of $1.00 and .50. If you are a member, you are needed at this meeting to help organize the sale. If you are not a member but would like to help, you are also welcome.
For those of you visiting the library in the last couple of weeks, you met our new staff member, Cassey Fowler. Cassey is a Carthage native and has worked in the surrounding areas. Her excellent computer skills were acquired when she worked in Dallas as a legal secretary. Cassey enjoys cooking and, of course, is a passionate reader. She enjoys helping people and is a good resource for assisting with computer research or book selection. We are fortunate to have Cassey join the staff.

September 11, 2015 - The Tocker Foundation located in Austin, Texas notified the Fannie Brown Booth Library on August 31st that the library’s grant had been funded. The Tocker Foundation promotes Texas public libraries in communities of 12,000 or less. Grant applications are reviewed by a permanent committee of librarians appointed by the Texas Library Association. This grant brings the cumulative grant support by the Tocker Foundation to the Fannie Brown Booth Library to $19,198.
In 1992, the foundation endowed by Phillip and Olive Tocker decided to focus grant distribution to small rural libraries in Texas. Grants are distributed to assisting libraries to serve as community centers, information resources and provide literacy and bilingual programs. The Fannie Brown Booth Library has successfully received grants for new computers, new management software, and most importantly funds for quality, current library books. The current grant will be used to primarily purchase children’s series books and nonfiction books.
The library continues to seek financial support from the community and other grant sources in order to continue serving Shelby County residents with quality services and materials.
September 8, 2015 - Starting Friday, September 11th and Saturday, September 12th, library hours for the Fannie Brown Booth Library will change for Fridays and Saturdays. New hours will be: Friday: 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Saturday: 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
Library hours for Tuesday through Thursday will still be 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Septmber 10, 2015 - Gates Chapel Baptist Church of Shelbyville will host a Helping Hand Benefit Program for Sis. Ira Dean Lister who lost her home in a fire. The musical benefit program will be held onSaturday, September 19 at 7pm. All choirs, groups, praise dancers and soloist are invited to perform. These events usher in the season prior to the Festival opening Thursday, October 1st.
The Chicken Fajita Kick-Off Lunch sponsored by East Texas Poultry Supply starts at 11:00 a.m. on the Historic Downtown Center Square according to Chairman, Bryan Wages. The lunch includes two chicken fajitas, chips, salsa and a drink for $7 per plate and delivery is available for 5 or more advance orders by calling 598.3682 or emailinginfo@shelbycountychamber.com by Friday, September 18th. Decorated floats, trailers, tractors, or business vehicles lend a great time, and just about anything goes! Participants will line up at the Farmers State Bank Drive-Thru at 4:00. The parade will circle the historic downtown square led by the Shelby County Junior Chamber of Commerce at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 23rd.
Following the parade Shelby County Chefs will highlight chicken recipes at the Chicken Cooking Contest sponsored by Tyson Foods. Trophies and cash prizes are given to the top cooks by categories, including People’s Choice and the Best Dressed Table. The public is invited to come out at 5:30 p.m. on the east side of the Square and try all the dishes for $5. To enter the contest recipes may be emailed to info@shelbycountychamber.com, mailed to or dropped off at the Chamber offices, 100 Courthouse Square, A-101, Center, Texas 75935. Chairman Denise Merriman states the deadline for submitting recipes is Wednesday, September 16th.
Festival chairman Jim Sawyer announces the evening‘s events will also include a live and silent auction at the Rooster Revel sponsored by Texas State Bank at 6:00 p.m. The exclusive Rooster Revel 2015 metal art silhouette designs are created and hand painted by the Center High School Agribusiness and Marketing students led by teacher, Jessica Shadix. “Meet the Artist” will take place Wednesday, September 9th at 11:00 a.m. in the Center High School library. The limited edition artistic creations will be on display for public viewing at various business locations prior to the auction, according to Chairman, Andi Foster.
Two Festival events which highlight Shelby County’s rich heritage are the Quilt Show sponsored by Scull Timber and Photography Show sponsored by Vieux Carre’ Photography. Local artistic talent will be displayed October 1, 2 and 3. The Quilt Show will be held in the 1885 Historic Courthouse on the Center Square from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Quilt entrants may be either the owner of the quilt(s) entered or have been involved in the execution/making of the quilt(s). The categories for entries are: Hand pieced/hand quilted, Appliqué/hand quilted, Machine pieced/hand quilted, Appliqué machine/machine quilted, Machine pieced/machine quilted, Miniature Quilts, Wall Hangings, Theme Quilts and Traditional Quilts. Heirloom quilts are welcomed.
The Photography Show will be held at the Vision Source office of Dr. Charles Collard located next to the Rio Theatre on the Center Square from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. all three days of the Poultry Festival. Photography Show Categories include Fine Art, Scenic, Urban, People, Animals, Digital Manipulation, Flowers and Poultry according to Chairman Billie Jones. September 9, 2015 - A truck fire ignited at a residence off FM 138 on Tuesday, September 8, 2015 and the West Shelby County Volunteer Fire Department (WSVFD) was dispatched to the scene at 1:40pm.
When the firemen arrived at 11648 FM 138, the truck was completely engulfed in flames near a house. The firemen were able to gain control of the fire and extinguish the flames quickly. Some of the fire spread through the grass in the yard, but was prevented from traveling to the house.
According to the WSVFD, a resident of the house, Ludivina Noriega explained she, her husband and child arrived at the residence in the 2000 Ford F-150 when her husband quickly told her to get out of the truck. At that time the truck had ignited, and to prevent the fire from catching the house her husband was able to push the truck away, singeing his ear in the process.
Once the truck was extinguished, the firemen returned to the station at 2:30pm.
September 7, 2015 - The driver involved in a single-vehicle crash on Saturday, September 6, 2015 was life-flighted as a result of injuries received during the incident.
According to Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) State Trooper Dustin Ramos, at 4:16pm a white 2002 Chevrolet Impala was traveling southeast on CR 2468 when the vehicle left the roadway to the right. The driver over corrected left and crossed both lanes of traffic before leaving the road on the opposite side, as the Impala traveled off the side of the road, it struck a small tree and came to rest facing northwest.
Upon arrival, of DPS and Shelby County Sheriff's Deputy Adam Renfro, the driver was unresponsive and showed signs of possible intoxication. Due to possible injury he was transported by ACE EMS to a landing zone where he was life-flighted by Flight For Life to Good Shepherd in Longview.
The identity of the driver was undeterminable at the time of the crash investigation; however, the vehicle is registered to a Regelio Martinez of Center who was not necessarily the driver. Further information will be provided as it is made available.
September 7, 2015 - The Timpson Volunteer Fire Department (TVFD) was dispatched to 559 Third Street in Timpson in reference to a vehicle fire on Friday, September 4, 2015.
When the firemen arrived, the majority of the front end of a red 2000 Tahoe was engulfed in flames. They were able to quickly extinguish the fire; however, considerable damage to the vehicle was caused by the fire. According to members of the TVFD, Dimric Caraway, the owner, reported he had just arrived home when the Tahoe seemed to be having some sort of malfunction as he was driving.
After no obvious problem was discovered, he went inside of the residence. Later, it appeared there was a light emitting into the residence from outside and that is when Caraway and other residents within the home discovered the fire and called for help from the fire department at 10:32pm.
No injuries were reported as a result of the fire and the cause was unable to be determined.
