September 13, 2023 - The following individuals have outstanding funds due to them from Shelby County between 2012 and 2021. To claim these funds, you must appear in person with proof of identity, to the Shelby County Treasurer's office between the hours of 9-11am and 2-4pm Tuesday through Thursday. No phone calls will be accepted regarding these funds. If your name appears on the list, come by the office, again with proof of ID, and claim your funds.
Funds must be claimed by 4:00pm, October 19, 2023 or they will be deemed unclaimed and reported to the State Comptroller as required.

October 18, 2023 - SL 500 just north of Center at the intersection of U.S. Highway 96 was the scene of a crash involving a live haul truck tractor loaded with chickens.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), Troopers investigated the crash involving a commercial motor vehicle on state Loop 500, at the intersection of U.S. Highway 96 on October 17, 2023.
The preliminary crash investigation indicates that at approximately 3:54am, a 1999 Mack truck tractor semi-trailer driven by Edward Hurst, 57, of Tenaha was traveling west on SL 500. It is reported that Hurst entered the intersection and attempted to make a right turn onto U.S. Highway 96 at an unsafe speed, which caused the truck tractor semi-trailer to overturn on its left side.
Hurst was transported to Nacogdoches Medical Center - Shelby Emergency Department for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
According to DPS, there is no further information available.
The Center Fire Department and TxDOT assisted at the scene with traffic control and clearing the scene.
October 17, 2023 - The Texas Department of Public Safety believes in Protecting and Serving Texas.
Recently, Texas Department of Public Safety - Southeast Texas Region Troopers conducted a task force in Shelby County to reduce crashes and address criminal behavior.
Troopers contacted 79 motorists, issuing more than 100 warnings and citations, including five arrests for outstanding warrants and other criminal violations.

October 16, 2023 - Over the week of October 8th through 14th the Joaquin Volunteer Fire Department responded to 7 calls. Here’s a summary of the week’s events.
Monday at 4:42pm a call came in for a fire starting in the woods near County Road 3822. The JVFD responded to put out the fire before it became a bigger issue.
Tuesday at 12:01pm a page was received for first responders at the Orielly’s Auto Parts on the Haslam Strip for a person who had passed out. The JVFD medical team and Allegiance EMS were present on scene to get the patient the help they needed.
Tuesday afternoon at 2:59pm a call came in for a brush fire at the end of County Road 3341. The fire had been caused by a fallen tree in a power line right-of-way. The JVFD responded with a brush truck and were able to get the fire under control within about an hour. The electric company arrived shortly thereafter to cut the power and remove the tree from the line.
Wednesday morning at 10:15am a call was received for a DOA at a residence on Highway 84 East. The JVFD assisted funeral home personnel with removing the deceased from the home.
Wednesday afternoon at 1:29pm the JVFD was called to a single vehicle accident on Connell Ferry Road. The accident was not severe and the driver was unharmed.
Wednesday evening at 4:18pm a page was received for a person that had fallen down some stairs at a residence on FM 2787. The JVFD med team arrived on scene to help the patient until Allegiance EMS could arrive to transport them.

Early Friday morning at 12:02am a call came in for a vehicle that had left the roadway on Highway 84 East near County Road 3598. The driver of a white pickup had run off the road before briefly catching air and coming back down at the bottom of the hillside beside the road. The occupants of the truck were checked out by the JVFD med team and Allegiance, and found to have only minor injuries. When law enforcement arrived on scene they took over and allowed the JVFD to clear.

October 7, 2023 (Photo Album) - There was a great turnout for the 2023 Chicken Fun Run 1K/Chicken Trot 5K with 114 participants overall. Runners and walkers took to the streets of Center to achieve their goal of improving their personal best or finishing their first 5K. Money from the event benefits Cultivate Mental Health. Jacks Dromgoole travels around to run events to run in memory of his little brother who passed away six years ago. His mother Delana shared Jacks like to run because his little brother can't and he runs for him. Jacks said he picked running in the East Texas Poultry Festival because his family raises chickens in Garwood and he just had to come run in the Poultry Festival. Garwood, Texas is approximately 4 hours away from Center, Texas. Great job Jacks on your dedication to running in memory of your brother!
In the Chicken Trot, the overall male runner was Eustorgio Flores of Tenaha with a time of 17:07.37 and the overall female runner was Pam Crawford with a time of 22:46.19.

October 9, 2023 - Over the week of October 1st through 7th the Joaquin Volunteer Fire Department responded to 3 calls, all of which came in on Monday. Here’s a summary of the week’s events.
At 9:12am a call was received for a diesel spill on FM 139 near the Tenaha Creek Bridge. The JVFD responded to provide traffic control while TxDOT cleaned up the spill.
At 10:52am a page came in requesting first responders to a residence on County Road 3341 for a patient that had recently had a heart surgery. The JVFD medical team responded with Allegiance EMS to help the patient.
At 3:06pm a call came in stating that there were reports of a fire near Highway 7 East and County Road 3169. This turned out to be a brush fire and the JVFD quickly got it under control.
Two other calls were paged for fires on Wednesday, but these both turned out to be control burns.

Center Texas’ East Texas Poultry Festival on Saturday, October 7, 2023 –
On Saturday, the Center town square held the 2023 East Texas Poultry Festival Car and Motorcycle Show, sponsored by Texas Farm Bureau Insurance Company. Taking the top prize was Amy Acuna whose 2021 Dodge Challenger Super Stock Edition gained the trophy after competing among about 30 entries. Leon Aldridge was the Master of Ceremonies for the event and stated, “All went well this year and the event was a success.”
Center City Square on Saturday, October 7, 2023 –
At high noon on Saturday the East Texas Poultry Festival held a hot wing eating contest, sponsored by McWilliams Air Conditioning Company. The contest saw five participants gave their best effort at taking the trophy as the last man standing as each plate of wings became progressively hotter. The spicy sauces included jalapeno, habanero, ghost chilies, Trinidad scorpion, Carolina reaper and chocolate peppers.
Matthew Kay proved to be the last man standing and took the trophy, a cash prize, a gift basket, as well as, the top title and bragging rights. All witnesses who were present will likely attest to the fact that he, indeed earned it all: “the hard way.”
