Tenaha Special Events Center, February 2, 2018 –
The Tenaha Tigers Varsity Basketball Team is now tied with Shelbyville for the the District 22 2A title race after winning a second round conference game, by a 79-49 score, over the Dragons. The two Shelby County teams are now knotted with an 8-1 mark in conference action. Each team has just three games remaining in league play.
Tenaha jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead early on and had grown their advantage to 12-2 with 5:20 left in the first period. The Tigers gained a 25-8 advantage by the end of the first quarter. Cody Foshee scored nine points for the Tigers in the opening period and Cole Ferguson scored all eight of the Dragons points in the opening frame.
Two early scores in the second period, by Dragons sophomore Jakovian Buckley, cut Tenaha’s lead to just twelve points. The Tigers would go on a thirteen point run which would see them gain a 38-13 lead by the 3:10 minute mark of the second stanza. Tenaha took a 45-23 lead into the locker room for the halftime intermission.
Tenaha went on a scoring run during the third period which saw them acquire a 61-29 lead midway through the frame but, Shelbyville fought their way back to a 62-39 score going into the fourth quarter. Shelbyville outscored the Tenaha 10-1 in the final 2:55 of the third quarter.
Tenaha outpaced the Dragons 17 points to 9 in the fourth quarter in route to taking the 30-point win. This win gave Tenaha an 11-2 overall record. Shelbyville has 24-4 combined conference/ non-conference record.
Trai Gardner led the Tigers with 28 points, Cody Foshee had 21, Hayden Jenkins 17, Erik Smith 3, LaDarrius Garrett 3, and Jay Lloyd scored two points.
Cole Ferguson and Jakovian Buckley teamed up for 18 points each for the Dragons. Teammate, Jordan Boykins 7, Kurtrick Allen 4, and H’Leighten McClelland scored two points.
The Dragons will travel to Woden Eagles’ Gymnasium on Friday, February 9, 2018. Tipoff with the Eagles is slated for 8 p.m.
Tenaha will travel to Woden on Tuesday February 6, 2018. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. at Eagles’ Gymnasium.
