Center Finishing 2017-18 Season with Long List of Athletic Achievements

Center Athletic Director Barry Bowman has announced a long list of athletic achievements for Center High School. The current school year still has three weeks remaining and a couple of sports are still underway. Varsity baseball, Coached by Kelly Spann, is still competing in playoff eliminations after winning the District 16 Class 4A championship.

Center Roughriders Varsity football team, Head Coached by Barry Bowman, was one of the first successes for this year. They made the playoffs with a 3-3 district mark. The ‘Riders started their pre-district season with an 0-4 mark but eventually ended the regular season with an impressive win over highly favored Kilgore High School.

Cross Country, Head Coached by Chase Rathke and Jacklyn Hamilton, saw the Boys Varsity team win the district title and the Girls Varsity placed runner-up. Both the Boys and Girls were Regional Qualifiers and the Boys also had state level qualifiers.

Basketball, under Head Coach Hiram Harrison, took the title in District, Bi-district, and Area levels of the playoffs. They made a very strong Regional level appearance.

Track and Field was Head Coached by Jimmy Irvin. The team saw the Junior Varsity squad gain the district title. The Varsity Boys had two Regional Qualifiers. They gained a school record in the 3200 Meter race and finished in third place. The ‘Riders have more boys participating than any time in the past three years.

The Roughriders’ Girls Varsity placed third in the District 16 4A regional team standings. They placed fourth in regional long jump, seventh in the 4x100 Meter Relay, and qualified in the 4x200 Meter Relay.

Varsity Tennis, Coached by Leon Dykes, saw their regional qualifying team bring home a third place doubles finish.

Centers’ Varsity Golf Team had two district medalist as well as, Regional Qualifiers.

The CHS Girls’ Varsity, Junior Varsity, and Ninth Grade Volleyball teams made vast improvement throughout this season and promise to bring a lot of excitement in future competitions.

The Varsity Girls Basketball team showed improvement throughout the season. The ‘Riders Junior Varsity took home the district title.

The Varsity Girls Powerlifting Team had two State Qualifiers this season. The Boys team had one State Qualifier as well.

CHS Boys Varsity Soccer, Coached by Gerardo Martinez, won District, Bi-District, Area and Regional Semifinal games before being defeated at the Regional Final level of the UIL State Playoffs.

The Girls Varsity Soccer Team improved and they are a young team which shows a lot of promise for future teams to come.

The Center Athletic Staff will recognize Center ISD student-athletes at their Roughriders Athletic Banquet on Tuesday, May 15, 2018.

Coach Bowman said, “We are eager to get the positive news out about our student’s achievements. It has been a great year for Center Athletics. We are proud of what our kids and staff have been doing. Our kids had great accomplishments at competitions and part of this is the dedication of our coaching staff. Coaching is a 7-day-a-week job. On top of this we have coaches and teachers making sacrifices and we even have a built-in tutorial program when needed. Our academic Grade Point Average is the best it’s been in three years. ”

June 4, 2018 will see the Center Roughriders start their Summer Athletic Program.
