David's Daily Devotion for October 6

October 6, 2022 - Good Morning! It’s Thursday, October 6.

Today, here in Shelby County, Texas, we begin our annual festival celebrating all things chicken - Poultry Fest! And, this morning, we look at festivals from the Bible.

There are three major Jewish festivals each year. The most famous one is Passover. It's celebrated in the spring, and the name refers to when the Jews were slaves in Egypt and they put the blood of a lamb over their doors to cause the death angel to “pass over” their house. Jesus attended this festival the last week of His life.

Pentecost, from the Greek word for fifty, comes fifty days after Passover. It’s a time to celebrate the wheat harvest. And it was the time when the Holy Spirit was given to the disciples of Jesus - and to us.

The Feast of Tabernacles is held in the fall, when grapes and olives are harvested. It also recalls the 40 years that the Israelites wandered in the wilderness and lived in tents, or tabernacles. Jesus came down to Jerusalem from Galilee for this festival in the autumn before the Cross. The Pharisees heard that He was teaching in the Temple and sent their guards to arrest Him.

The guards returned to the Pharisees empty handed, and when asked why they had not arrested Jesus, they said, "No one ever spoke the way this man does".

Meet you back here tomorrow, and maybe I'll see you at Poultry Fest!
