May 23, 2025 - Good Morning! It’s Friday, May 23.
“I would be a Christian... if it were not for Christians.”
This is a quote attributed to the famed Indian leader, Mahatma Gandhi. Before he was assassinated in 1948, Gandhi led his country to win its independence from England. And his method of nonviolent resistance directly influenced American civil rights leader Martin Luther King.
Gandhi, a Hindu, had a lifelong interest in Christianity. He read through the Gospels, and often quoted from the teachings of Christ. As the story goes, when still a young man, he tried to enter a Christian church, but was roughly turned away because of the color of his skin. From that experience, and others, came the inspiration for his famous quote.
In studying the words of Christ, Mahatma Gandhi no doubt came across a verse from the 13th chapter of John, a scripture that speaks to us again today. “A new commandment I give to you. Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this shall everyone know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
Meet you back here on Monday,
David
