David's Daily Devotion for June 25

June 25, 2025 - Good Morning! It’s Wednesday, June 25.

Quick trivia question - What do General George Custer, Jacques Cousteau, Farrah Fawcett, and Michael Jackson have in common? That’s a pretty odd group. Give up? Well, they all died on this date. Custer made his “last stand” in 1876. Deep sea explorer Cousteau took his final voyage in 1997. And Farrah and Michael made world headlines - on the same day - in 2009. A big coincidence? Not really. With only 365 days on the calendar, any day you pick will have historical events and notable deaths and births. William Shakespeare, notably, was born and died on the same date.

One of Shakespeare’s most famous quotes comes from his Sonnet 18 - “Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?” One of the Bible’s most famous verses comes from 2 Peter 3 - “With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day”. Some mistakenly read this verse as a description of the historical timeline of Creation. Still others misunderstand it as a prediction of the day of Christ’s return. Peter has a different lesson to teach here.

Peter wrote this verse in his last days, as he was facing execution in Rome. He wrote it (in about 66 AD) to Christians who were dealing with questions from skeptics of their young faith - “Your Messiah promised he would return, so where is he?” Peter isn’t offering a prediction of that return, but is teaching them, and us, that God’s conception of time is completely different than ours. In the next verse he says “The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise, as some understand slowness. Instead He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance”.

And the old apostle ends that 3rd chapter, ends the book, ends his life - with these words - “Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ”. That’s good advice for any day.

Meet you back here tomorrow,
David
