July 25, 2025 - Good Morning! It’s Friday, July 25.
Did you have a favorite Bible story as a child? Was it “Jonah and the Whale”? Or “Daniel in the Lion’s Den”? Maybe it was “Noah and the Ark.” My favorite, for obvious reasons, was always “David and Goliath.”
As a boy, I was fascinated with Goliath. My Sunday School teacher told me that he was nine feet tall. Today, most Bible historians believe his height was closer to seven feet. But if your adversary could kill you with his bare hands, what difference does a couple of feet make? I was fascinated with David’s sling. I had a slingshot (or peashooter), with a y-shaped handle and a rubber band. But David’s weapon was different - a leather strap that he would spin in circles over his head, faster and faster, until lethally flinging a stone toward its target. I improvised one of these with a belt... and ended up breaking out our garage window.
The story of the shepherd boy who went up against a giant is a classic saga of scripture. David’s incredible bravery foreshadowed his amazing rise to become King. Everybody loves an underdog story, a story about the little guy who beats up the bully. But David always gave credit where credit was due. In I Samuel 17:46, we read his words - “This day the Lord will deliver you into my hands and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel.”
Meet you back here on Monday,
David
